A friend has an 88 with a good duke in it. He also has an dead 84 which is in otherwise good shape. Unfortunately the 88 is unsalvageable, rotten cradle, t bone damage etc.. How difficult would it be to get this engine to work in his 84 ? I know the wiring would be different and he would probably have to use the 88's ECM. My friend is talking about either dropping this engine in or putting in a 2.8 he has. Though the 4 banger would probably be easier.

I think this subject has been discussed before and the you really have to decide what is your time worth. There were a ton of changes between 84 and 88, even on the dukes. Tp pull it off successfully I think a swap of complete harnesses would be required, to include the interior harness from the dashboard back. Any thing else will be cut and pray. If you have the time and engery anything is possible and can be done. It won't be quick, but I will say few have attempted it. Most folks end up doing a complete swap and go for more cubic inches, either a 3800 or 4.9 swap. Its your choice and your car so have fun.

Just my .02 cents,

Did it once won't do it again as it is about the same amount of work as an engine swap. The complete harness needs to be changed to be properly done as well as the throttle cable which is also different. Dan

The '88 is also of questionable value, as that was the year of the new ballance system. Now a smoother running engine is fine, but the new system has a tendancy to fail. And when that happens, your oil pup goes out with it, followed by the entire engine.
I'm not saying it'll happen 3 days after completing the swap, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Agree with the above--even though you have a freebie, you will end up spending alot of time & money , then wish you would have gone with another swap. Sell off the good parts that you have and put that towards another engine swap....Good Luck with your choices---there may be info in the archives dealing with this swap..
