Hey guys, trying to troubleshoot my lack of engine startup. It starts with fluid only. Per 3800 recommendation I changed the fuel pumps relays, no go. I cannot hear the pump cycle when I turn ignition but the previous owner said it work, maybe not the case. It was mentioned that there is an inline fuse to the fuel pump. WHere praytell might that be? I am going to replace the ECU this weekend.

Are there any good links to remove and replace fuel pump. The fuel pump is my least favorite option and I would like to check it last whereas it appears to be quite complicated for my simpleton mind.

Thanks for all of your help guys.

Have you tried the direct power to the fuel pump via the ALDL connection. Connect the G terminal to a 12V power source. The ALDL connection is located near the cigarette lighter, under that little cover.

There is also a fuse in the fuse box under the dash

The 85gt that I just bought was suposed to have a good fuel pump in it and the pump was bad. Jump the cables as listed above and if there is no sound swap it out

remove the panel where the cigarette light is. the ALDL connector is there.
it will look like this:
(Thanks to Jazzman for the pic)

jumper 12v to pin g, labeled fuel pump terminal in the pic. the pump should run, you should be able to hear it.

Thanks Jazman. When you mean jumper to pin g what source of dc 12v should I use? And is it just the positive terminal? Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks MAtt

The power feed to the cigarette lighter is a good 12v source. Just grab a piece of any ole wire you have handy and run a line from the power feed at the lighter and connect it to terminal G. If you hear the fuel pump Bob's yer uncle and if you don't, get ready to drop the tank.

Thanks Dave. Therefore this jump is the last before the fuel pump and that there are no other relays in line. I like the quote "Bob's yer uncle" never heard it before, ya no it now, eh? Thats the only canadian I know, LOL. Thanks for your help.

honestly, those fuel pumps are notorious for just crappin out. if you run it out of gas a few times or run bad old gaass thru it, they die. if you sue cheap aftermarket replacements, you will be replacing them more, you get what you pay for.

TJM, are there any good links for an aftermarket replacement fuel pump?

Thanks Matt

I keep hearing about how much of a PITA these fuel tanks are to drop, in order to change the fuel pump/sender. Has anyone every thought of cutting an access hole above where the fuel pump would be located to make these jobs less hectic? I am seeing these more and more in newer vehicles. Just wondering how hard it would be to fabricate something like this. Or is it just in one of those locations that would be more hassle than its worth.

it's more hassssle. under the console, would need to mod the skelton undeneath, not sure exactly But iirc, it is very close to the shifter area too.
dropping the tank is really not that big a deal, the worst part is the t bolts possibly being rusted solid.
you'll spend more time trying to get the sender unit calibrated/cleanud up will probably take longer than the rest of it.

The fuel pump is directly under the shifter, I think another member found the center point to level the Fiero was at this point too. Seems to me it would tip backwards..

Absolutely Lovely. Can hardly wait to remove and replace FP. But one question guys. The above referenced jump is that the last in line to the fuel pump? In other words there are no relays between same and the FP? Another stupid question, thats a surprise, my 84 2m4 also has a FP. But yet I don't hear is cycle when I turn the key. And this baby, my 2m4, runs like a dream.

Again thank you

Yes jumping it puts power directly on the pump. There are one or two connectors between the aldl plug and the pump. (one for sure)
Also check your Cig lighter to make sure there is power there also. Don't assume there is.

On hearing the pump, some of them are very quiet. (if your really lucky) My first 88GT pump was very quiet, the replacement I can hear. But sometimes it's just you don't listen for it so are not aware of the sound.

On the T bolts take your time and spray them good with WD or PB and work the nuts back and forth as you take them off.
Can also help if you have a small wire bush to work the threads once in a while as you work the nuts. Just don't hurry them.

If you have ac the tank likes to hung up on the lines since they have the foam on them but it comes out. Just drop the back end a little and as you work it dowm slide it toward the back of the car.
Help to have a trolley jack under the tank to help hold it if there is much gas in the tank.

Anyway good luck checking it with the power jump.
