GM themselves reccommend Synchromesh fluid, and that seems to be the best. It usually brings about a noticable improvement in shifting, and doesn't seem to cause any problems. You can get Synchromesh from GM direct, or cheaper by the company that actually makes it. I can't remember who that is, but you'll be able to find it a large enough parts place.

You don't HAVE to use Synchromesh fluid. Back in the day, I believe either 5W30 or 10W30 was the acceptable oil to use. I've never used synchromesh, so I cannot comment whether it is better or not.

I would recommend Synromesh. I had syncromesh in my old isuzu and it shifted nice and smooth, even in cold weather. My new isuzu has 5W30 in it and it is very difficult to shift when cold and not a whole lot better when warm. GM has a Technical Service Bulletin out to use Syncromesh fluid to improve shift quality. I will be switching back to Syncromesh in my transmission soon!
You can get synchromesh fluid at AutoZone stores. The counter drone may not know they have it, but it'll be on the shelf.
It's worth every penny - one of the first things I do when I acquire a Fiero is to change the transaxle fluid to synchromesh fluid. It makes a very noticeable difference in shifting; smoother action, less force required.

Pennzoil syncro is carried by Autozone in many places. Some of the GM sites also say they have been having good luck with Mobil1. Wonder how much different it is from syncro.
