What's the best type/weight oil to use in the Getrag? I think the dipstick says 5w30, but is that just regular motor oil?

Nothing but Synchromesh.
The original GM spec said 5w30 engine oil, but a tech bulletin later changed that recommendation to Synchromesh.

Do NOT use automatic transmission fluid or gear oil of ANY type.

FYI, you can buy GM Synchromesh at the dealer. It usually runs about $11/qt. You can get Penzoil Synchromesh at AutoZone for about $7/qt. Redline, Amsoil and a few others also make it, but I don't know where to get them other than online.

I'm not sure what the previous owner had in my Getrag, but when I had to replace a seal, I changed to Synchromesh. The shifts were noticably smoother. Got it at Autozone.

I have some Royal Purple I got for free from a co-worker! How about using some of that in the tranny? Its called "Synchromax". It says on the bottle that it can be used in a M/T in place of A/T fluid or engine oil.

I'm not sure that'll work with a Getrag. If Formula88 is correct and the transmission does not specify a Dextron II equivalent fluid, then SynchroMax is too thin. My personal recommendation would be to use Redline's MTL, which has a 5w30 equivalent viscocity, but if you can't find that at a local dealer, any Synchromesh product should work just as well.

For us, go to Tires 'N Parts on Dawson St in downtown to pick up Royal Purple products, and Autosport Gallery on N Market Drive in Raleigh or Carolina Mustang Performance on W Chatham St in Cary for Redline.

According to Royal Purple's website, Synchromax can be used in place of GM Synchromesh.
