I have an 87 GT and the engine rotates but will not start. Also, Last time I ran it about a week ago, it ran kind of rough and I smelled gas and can still smell gas when I try to start it up.

When are the possibilities, I take it it's obviously fuel related?

It's a good thing I don't rely on this car anymore as this it's right on cue with one of it's 3 annual problems it has every year.

If you smell gas odds are its Ignition related.

Can you hear the fuel pump turn on?

Have you tested for spark?

You may have a bad ignition module or coil. Also check your distributor cap and rotor.

pull the coil wire off the dist. pput an old spark plug in there rest it against something metal. of no spark you have your problem.
next, while cranking, see if you have any tach movement. if it sits at 0 then it is likely the module or the pickup coil.

edit: you can test the pickup coil with an ohmeter, should be 750-1500 ohms, 800-900 typical for new.

I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key.

Also, I forgot to add for a few weeks prior, when I'd park the car and put it in park, it'd idle around 2k rpms for about 2 minutes before descending to 1k.

They only need 3 things to run.....

1. The correct air/fuel mixture
2. Suitable compression
3. A suitably strong spark delivered at the correct time.

Everything else is fluff. Let's start with the basics, and do some testing before replacing anything.

Question #1.

How many pounds of fuel pressure do you have on the Schrader valve?

Should look something like this.....about 45 lbs.

Let me know that and then we'll go from there.

Check the vac line that runs from your map sensor over to the fuel pressure regulator, if you can swing it, try to see if you can pull that line off at the regulator to see if any gas spills out, or at the map end of it, if that smells like gas. I would agree with the above, start with your fuel pressure reading and go from there, then on to maybe a leak down test on the fuel system (if thats the problem) to determine which part is the culprit, also pull your plugs--they tell a good story of whats going on...

Is you distributor bolt loose? Have someone try starting it and rotate your distributor a little in both directions...your timing could be off.
