Hi. Was looking into a aftermarket temp gauge since my temp gauge seems to work only when it wants to. It needs to use its sender. Where can I install the sender I was thinking up by the radiator but will it read right? Also can I just remove the old sender and put the new one in its place and wire it in? I'm not sure if the ECU needs to see the sender. Also anyone know a company temp gauge that works with the original sender so I can just tap the wires. Thanks,

-Frank

I believe you could put the new sender in the place of the old one, assuming it threads in. The ECM has its own sender.

In any case, you want the temperature of the coolant before the thermostat, since its engine temp you are most concerned about.

Have you considered just replacing your temp gauge?

I had a problem like yours.

My factory gsauge would work every other start. I bought a Autometer gauge and a unverisal 2 position A pilar pod. I tee'd off the factory gauge nad ran seperat wires for the new one. The Autometer gauge worked everytime and the factory continued to work every other start. My motor was a 2.5 4cyl. Duke. If you like, I can post pics of the gauge pod and wiring (I dont have the motor anymore, doing a V8 swap).

Good luck.

If you don't mind, could you post the pictures of your pod and wiring?

Hey cire36 pics would be awesome. I'm still trying to figure out where to put the sender. I was thinking the upper rad hose. Not sure if that will get a good reading though. Thanks. Later.

Okay everyone, here are some pics.

This is a pic of the aircraft style "nut plates" that I used so the pod can be removed without having to remove the A pilar interior trim.
I have 5 more pics. Have to reply again.

Continued.

This one shows the wiring I did for the gauge itself. I used spiral wrap on the wires so they wont chaf on the hold down bracket. I also put electrical tap on the bracket for a little extra protection.

This is the vehical side of the harness. I used to rewire Military and civilian aircraft. I make the wiring as modular as possible for ease or repair. It requires extra effort but will pay off if I ever need to repair somthing.

The connector (Molex 2 circuit) contain the sender wires. I have water andoil pressure gauges in my pod. I did not trust my factory oil press gauge. I installed all of this in 96-97. Never had any issues.

I have a couple more pics but PIP says they are too big and I have never been able to figure out how to save size changes. If someone is willing to resize and send back to me, IM me with your e-mail and I will send them to you. I want to post them so I can give an explaination with them.

Thanks for looking.

Had the same prob. Know they're kinda pricey, but Fiero Store had original replacement temp/gas gauges available. I priced the one- and two-pod mounts and gauge(s), and between the cost and labor/frustration, the original gauges looked better and better. What blew my mind, the new gauge didn't work when installed. Well, in the time between the gauge failing, in the installing the new gauge, the temp sensor failed. Found a thread here about high idle speed (was having that prob) that clued me into the sensor. Replaced that, and BINGO!!
