My fan isn't working properly. It doesn't seem to want to come on. It doesn't even come on when I turn on the A/C. It's currently wired so that I can switch it on my turning on the headlights. I didn't do it that way; that's the way it was working when it was delivered.
- Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the fan (87 GT auto)?
- I know that there is both a fuse and a fusable link for the fan. Which fuse is it (the labels on the fuse box are illegible)? and where is the fusable link located?
- Does anyone have any tips for tracking down common problems with the fans?

Have you checked the Relay for the fan?

If even the AC doesn't turn on the fan, it does indeed sound like the relay. The relay on the 4 cyl is up in front compartment in front of left headlight. Not sure if this is the location for the 6 cyl. . The fan is powered thru a fusible link back by the battery, to the rear bumber side of the battery at battery junction box. There are a number of fusible links in this area and I'm sorry to say I've never had to determine which is which. Hopefully someone else can weigh in here.

The fuse for the 'control' side of the fan relay is a 20A fuse. This fuse is on right end of top row. The top row has four fuses in a row in it, with the two left hand fuses being 10A and the two right hand fuses being 20A. If fan is connected to headlight switch, don't know what mods might have been done or why.

The FAN RELAY is controlled (energized from 20A fuse) by a brown/white power side wire connected to the relay being grounded by a green/white wire that 'grounds' when AC is turned on or the coolant temperature switch on engine closes due to high temp. Hope this makes sense.

The fan's power is a red wirre from fusible link to the fan relay and a black/red wire from relay to fan. When the relay switch is energized by aforementioned grounding it pulls in the power side of the fan that delivers power to the fan.

An archive search should yield links to wiring diagrams available online.

One more question:

Should the radiator fan continue running for a few minutes after the car is shut off?

The reason I ask is that I drove the car to work today (30 miles) with the fan on the whole time and the temp guage never got up to the 220 degree mark. When I got out of the car everything seemed fine still. However, when I went back to the car later in the day, there was a large pool of coolant under the front of the car. Should I have left the radiator fan on for a few minutes after shutting down the car to give the coolant time to cool? Or, am I looking at some other cooling system issue?

you probably have another issue.
the fan should only come on at 225 degrees stock, it should not be running all the time unless the a/c or defogger on an a/c car is on.
some things to check:
the front radiator cap. the books list the wrong one, if it is the non spring loaded center valve, ie the overlow return part in the center is just hanging down istead of held shut with a spring, you will elak out after shutdown.
be sure you have no air in your system. there are many methods of burping a system, do a search and pick your pleasure.
if you are not overheating, (the guage is notoriously inacurate), then it is likely only the front cap or air in the system.
