Has anyone done there own tinting and is it somewhat easy? I already have some on but I have no clue what percent it is. I was at Advance Auto Parts and saw some 20% and I thought about buying it. Can you do this in a weekend? How would I tint the the windows and rear window? Thanks for any advice.

Yes you can do it yourself if you have the patience. Do a search on the web and you can find site that explain how to do it.
I did my side windows but have not done the back yet. Just have not had time.
Choose your tint. Clean the glass really well as well as the door and area around it. Have a flat clean area to work on and measure and cut a piece a little bigger than the window. You can leave some extra on the top and sides but you want about a 1/2 inch to go below the inside wipes but not much more.
For triming tint on the side and top glass edge I just used a small piece of wook with a 1/8 step in it. I then held a razor blade on the step and gently trimmed the glass edge to give that small uncovered edge where the rubber seal mets the glass when rolled up.
When ready have a spray bottle of water with a small about of dish soap in it. Not much just a few drops to two cups. Just makes a good wetting solution. Peel the backing off the tint and spray the glass and the tint with the water. Carefully place the tint on the glass and get it floated to the postion it needs to be. You want to tuck that 1/2 below the dew wipe. When in place I use the plastic cedit cards you get in the mail for a squeegy and start working the bubble out from the center of the window out. Take your time and really work them out being carefull not to wrinkle the tint. Be sure and work the tint down below the dew wipe so it sticks to the glass well otherwise when you roll the window down it will peel it off.
Trim the edge when down.
Having not done it before took me about 30-45 min. per window to get a perfect job with no bubbles or wrinkles.
Know others will have lots to add but that is my experience with it and when very well. Looks as good as any shop would do.

Make sure that the tint will pass vehicle inspection if your area has it. In my state (RI ) you can't have tint on the side windows and yet the places that do tinting forget to mention that fact.
Most tint places will charge about 100.00 to do a Fiero. They will only do what is legal in your area.
the one problem with tint from autozone or the like, is that it is usually not of good quality, so it will scratch or tear easily and fade to that purple color over time.
Usually you can buy the better tint from the tint places, but I bought mine from Ebay. There is a member from here who sells the precut tint on there for like $24.00 for the doors and back glass.

Actually it is really easy of you have the right tools, and pre cut tint.
I use ebay and buy laser cut tint for about 25-30 dollars delivered. This is a 3 piece set cut for exact fit for your vehicle. I like 50 % for the side windows and about 15% for the rear window. % is the amount of light that is transmitted through, thus if it is bright out and you are getting x amount of light with the window down, and with the tint on you will then get 50% of the light transmitted with the windows up. Remember these windows are already factory tinted in the glass for about 70-85% light transmission, helpfull to know as the Police will use a tint device that measures both the tint you placed on the glass and the factory glass tint.
Now for the tools you will need a tint kit for about 3 bucks at wal-mart. This is a rubber squeege and a very sharp knife. You will need a couple of razor blades to clean the glass A large piece of clean cardboard or working area that is larger then the window in which you are working on is needed You will need a spray bottle and a couple of drops of dish soap. a little piece of masking tape and last but not least a clean area static free and clear of all lint.
For Installation you will do the following
remove the inner door panel and inner dew wipes, you do this in order to have the tint go below the visible viewing area
clean the glass several times especially with a clean razor and dust free lint free cloth or towels.
determint which is the driver and passanger side of the tint
with two pieces of masking tape attact one to eack side of a lower corner of the tint. we do this in order to seperate the tint layer from the protective layer of the tint, try to do this on the clean working area you have aquired
keep the tint side down as you remove the protective clean layer, carefully pulling off this protective layer and spraying the tint film as you remove the protective layer.
keep the tinted side soaked with lots of water it should be well imersed with water, now soak the inner glass down with the same water solution.
lifting from the top of the tint place the tint on the side of the window and slide into place do not squegee out the water until it is perfectly placed on the window, the tint should be about 1/32" down from the overall top of the glass so that it will stick properly and not peel off.
now with the rubber squegee carefully squegee out all the water in the same direction to remove all water trapped between the film and the glass. try and work from the center outwards
do not worry about light hazing or streaking as this will disapear within the next couple of days.
Do not roll down the window for 36-48 hours depending on temperature.
This is assuming that you are using the pre cut tint which fits absolutely perfectly, if you bought a roll of generic tint then the directions are the same except you trim off the excess after the tint has dried for 3-4 hours.
I find it tricky to use bulk tint and strongly reccommend the pre cut for vehicle tint.
The most important thing is a clean working area, I have been tinting windows for over 24 years and find even my own hair falls onto the tint, I now use a welding hat or simular object in order to avoid this. An extra pair of hands is helpful but not necessary
Give it a try, if you keep everything clean and use lots and lots of water it will come out great.
Good luck

i think our "legal" tint here is like 75%, the window tinting place basicaly said its like covering the window with saran wrap it is pointless! the shops will do whatever you tell them to do! it is very rare to get pulled over for window tint (atleast around here). i have had 2% on my back windows and 20% on my fronts. I have been pulled over one time, they gave me a warning to remove it but it must have slipped my mind cause i never did! Hell, vehicles come from the factory with illegal tint!! you usually dont have to worry about it unless you local P.D. are assholes or get really bored. As a matter of fact i am on my way to get window tint stripper so i can do my fiero tomarrow.
couple hints:
CLEAN THE GLASS WELL!! lay the tint over the outside of the window to cut it out, much easier. be patient pay attention to the detals!! small bubbles will only get bigger!
Dont do it, If you want it to look right pay a expert. I got it right on a nissan truck one time but it started to peal about a month later in the corners, the tint at walmart is cheap I guess. And I tried and messed it up on a fiero, I know guy in Hueytown that is pretty cheap and I can give you the number. I plan on doing it to the formula once I have the caliper bolts come in the mail.

Im not doing anything right now. I'm just planning ahead. Synapse do the cops around here really care about that, b/c the tint on my dad's car is really deep. From the back seat to the trunk you can't see in from the inside, but his front windows were not tinted(we they were but not really useful). He went and got those tinted with whatever was legal and that's a big difference from the back to the front eventhough his fronts are still lighter.
Up in our neck of the woods , the locals usually won`t bother with it---the state boys however will, especially the front and sides--most of time they give you a warning. I wouldn`t worry about it to much --as mentioned above--the factory`s are kicking out worse in the way of darkness then we do.

Percentage Numbers represent amount of light transmission. Example : 35% means 35% light transmission. Also known as VLT or Visible Light Transmission. Film - Amount of light that is required to pass through window film. Example : 35% Film means that the film must pass through at least 35% visible light.
Net - Amount of light that is required to pass both the car window and the tint film. MPV - A vehicle such as a recreation vehicle such as a pickup truck including GMC Suburbans, Nissan Pathfinders, Extra Cab Trucks
When info is given, it is in the format of : Windshield / Front Side Windows / Rear Side Windows / Rear-Back Window / Year Passed Where : NO - No Film is Allowed ANY - Any degree of tinting is allowed AS-1 - On the windshield, there is a mark that says "AS-1" toward the top that defines that the tint cannot go below. UnDef - Nothing defined in the law. FMVSS 205 - A regulation that is found in the Code of Federal Regulation. The regulation is found in 49 CFR 571.205 35 % Film - Light that is measured on the film alone 35 % Net - Light that is measured both through the film and car window
Example
4 inches / 35 % Film / 15 % Net / 5 % Net / 1994
A tint brow on the windshield cannot go no lower than 4 inches, 35% film may be applied to the front side windows, 15% light must go through the combined window film and windows for the rear side windows and 5 % light transmission is required on the rear back window and film combined. The year 1994 is the year that the law went into effect. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alabama 6 inches / 35% Film / 35% Film / 35% Film / 1996
Note : MPV Vehicles are exempt behind the front side doors.
Alaska 5 inches / NO / 40% Net / 40% Net / 1994
Note : MPV Vehicles can have any degree of tinting behind the front side doors so long as they comply with FMVSS 205. Mirrored tint is prohibited.
Enforcement Note : Tint regulation does apply to non-Alaska registered vehicles. State Troopers write fix-it tickets which requires "repair" within 5 days and the City of Anchorage will write $150 tickets for the violation.
Arizona UnDef / 35% Film / ANY / ANY / 198?
Arkansas UnDef / 25% Net / 25% Net / 10% Net / 1994
Note : MPV's are allowed 10% Net tint on rear side windows
Enforcement Note : Tint law applies only to AR registered vehicles and vehicles from other states that have NO tint law which is now moot since all 50 states have some type of tint law with Wyoming being the last to pass a tint law.
California NO / NO / ANY / ANY* / 1987 ?
Note : If the rear-back window is tinted, left and right rear-view mirrors are required.
Medical exemption allows for tint or other shading material is allowed on the front side doors if it allows at least 35% of the light to go through, readily is removable and cannot be used at night.
Enforcement Note : Out-of-State cars driven in California are required to be in compliance with the CA Tint law.
Colorado 2 Phase Law: 4 inches or AS-1 / NO / ANY / ANY / 1989 4 inches or AS-1 / 27% Net / 27% Net / 27% Net / 1989
Note : No mirrored tint is allowed.
Enforcement Note : The fine for being in violation is $50 and the driver is not usually required to fix the windows. Tint shops are not allowed to tint cars beyond state law. State patrol carries light meters along with some local towns but they don't worry about window tinting unless it is very dark such as limo tint (5%).
Connecticut Complex / 35% Net / 35% Net / 35% Net / 1995
Note : MPV Vehicle windows behind the front side doors are exempt so long as they meet FMVSS 205. The Windshield can have a tint strip at the top. The amount is determined by a complex formula as defined in Sec 14-99g, Subsection C, part 11 as written by an East Coast lawyer.
Delaware AS-1 / NO / ANY / ANY / 199?
District of Columbia NO / NO / 50% Net / 50% Net / 1994
Enforcement Note : Can apply to out-of-state motorist, no out-of-state exemption defined in statute.
Florida AS-1 / 28% Net / 15% Net / 15% Net / 198?
Note : MPV Vehicles windows behind the front side doors must allow for 6 % Net light transmission.
Enforcement Note : Law enforced by the use of light meters and can apply to out-of-state motorist.
Georgia NO / 32% Net / 32% Net / 32% Net / 2005
Note : New law went into effect that can be enforced on out of state vehicles as well as Georgia registered vehicles. Penalty is up to $1000 and/or 12 months in jail as a misdemeanor.
On Jun 8, 2004, the Georgia Surpreme Court threw out GA's tint law since it discriminated against GA residents by not applying to non-residents. Look for the non-resident exemption to be repealed next year which would reinstate the tint law.
This can have ramifications for other states who exempt non-residents from their tint laws. Legislation was sponsored in the 2004 session to remove the non-resident exemption but failed to pass.
Guam ANY / ANY / ANY / ANY / 1978/9
Note : It was illegal to have tint but the tint law was declared unconstitutional as noted in the court decision part.
Hawaii NO / 35% Net / 35% Net / 35% Net / 198x
Enforcement Note : Illegal tint on cars can be a reason to be failed in the state safety inspection.
Idaho AS-1 / 35% Film / ANY / 35% Film / 1993
Note : Mirrored tint is illegal. Medical exemption ia available. Cars with window tint that are considered illegal can apply for a waiver between June 30, 1992 and Jan 1, 1993.
Illinois NO / NO / ANY / ANY* / 1984 ?
Note : If window tint is applied to the rear-back window, a right and left rear-view mirrors are required. Cars before 1982 model year are exempt from IL tint law.
Indiana 30% Film / 30% Film / ANY / 30% Film / 1995
Note : Darker tint is allowed for medical reason only as attested to by medical doctor or eye doctor.
Enforcement Note : Out-of-state motorist can be ticketed for being in violation of IN tint law but are usually left alone. Law enforcement usually enforces the tint law on the front side windows. Most law enforcement do not know that the rear-back window is included in the law. Some local towns will fine motorist $200 for violation as well as requiring them to fix it.
Legislation: HB1282 which will basically outlaw window tint. It would ban any tint that would go beyond Federal Standards which is 70% visible light transmission. Violation would fall under an enhanced penalty of a Class B infraction which has a max fine of $1000.
Iowa AS-1 / NO / ANY / ANY / Unknown
Note : A pending bill in the legislature would mandate light transmission on all windows of at least 70% (Basically no aftermarket tint allowed). Puts the federal window tint regulation into state law.
Enforcement Note : Iowa is spotty on enforcement but can enforce the law against out-of-state motorist such as writing a fix-it ticket.
Kansas AS-1 / 35% Net / 35% Net / 35% Net / 1987
Kentucky AS-1 / 35% Film / 18% Film / 18% Film / 1988
Note : MPV Vehicles can have 8% Film behind the front side doors.
Louisiana AS-1 / 40% Net / 25% Net / 12% Net / 199x
Maine NO / 50% Film / 50% Film / 50% Film / 198x
Enforcement Note : As the law is read, it can be applied to out-of-state cars. A car with tint that is more dark than allowed by the state can fail safety ispection.
Maryland NO / 35% Net / 35% Net / 35% Net / 1993
Massachusetts NO / 35% Net / 35% Net / 35% Net
Enforcement Note : People with 35% tint have been given tickets for tinting due to light meters reading less than 35% since car glass can have from 70% to 90% window tint.
Michigan 4 inches / 4 inches / ANY / ANY / 198x
Note : Changes to the law has been discussed such as allowing for 35% tint on the front side windows but the State Police would push hard for a complete ban on tint if it got through and they have the political power to do it.
Enforcement Note : Michigan State police will give the 3rd degree look to any car that is not in compliance with MI tint law but will usually leave out-of-state motorist alone.
Minnesota NO / 50% Film / 50% Film / 50% Film / 198x
Note : Darker tint is allowed with Medical Exemption.
Mississippi AS-1 / 35% Net / 35% Net / 35% Net / 1989
Enforcement Note : Illegal window tint can be a reason for failing the yearly state safety inspection.
Missouri AS-1 / 35% Net / Any / Any / 2002
Enforcement Note : New law removed out-of-state exemption but don't know how the MO State Highway Patrol will deal with that ?
Tint is NO LONGER part of the State Safety Inspection, a plus for MO residents.
Additional Note: Took effect Feb 14, 2002. Original law banned tint on the front side windows but allowed anything behind and then changed in 2001 for 35% NET on ALL windows and in 2002 changed to 35% NET on front side windows but once again, anything behind goes !
Montana AS-1 / 24% Net / 14% Net / 14% Net / 1991
Note : MPV Vehicles windows behind the front doors are exempt from tint law. Cars before Oct 1, 1991 that were registered in Montana and had tint that would be considered illegal under the law can continue to have any kind of window tint but the registration must indicate a tinted window waiver and the waiver can no longer be applied for. Those who have waviers can continue to use them and when the car is sold, the waiver is good for the next owner.
A permit for dark tint can be applied for if needed for security or medical reasons.
Enforcement Note : Montana Law enforcement is lax on enforcing the tint law but there is a heavy fine if enforced and maybe required to be fixed.
Nebraska AS-1 / 35% Film / 20% Film / 20% Film / 199x
Nevada AS-1 / 35% Film / ANY / ANY / 1993
Note : There is a medical exemption for the tint law.

i did some tinting 2day... i bought some "Gila" 20% from autozone for $10 and a tinting kit for $10. had extra so i did my tails also...
i only finished the one window as there was no space on the passenger side (but i do have it cut already). the streaks and lines are on the outside of the window, they are actually scrathes in the glass from something...
tail lights: they look AWESOME in person, i just wish i didnt have to add that pin striping crap to hide where the tint stops (tint wouldnt stick to the plastic)
tail lights on: (flash from camera makes them look dim, they are still plenty visible!!)

I tinted my windows a few months ago the same way Slownsteady did. They came out perfect and still look great. If you get the tint from AutoZone, just make sure you get the kit along with it. The kit comes with easy instructions and all the tools and adhesive solution. It was my first time tinting a window and it only took about 30 to 45 minutes per window. Before you tint your side windows take off the inner door skin and window seal, it makes the process much easier as opposed to trying to squeez the tint under the inner door seal. I used 5%, which is illegal here in Ohio and I havent been haggled by the police at all. In most big cities the police have other things to worry about besides window tint. If you get pulled over just roll your windows all the way down, it works for me everytime

My a/c needs a charge, so my windows ar always down. Heater works though, so yeah that excuse might not work. I'm tempted to try my own, but my only concern is the back window.
Where did you get all of your info? Anyways, I live in Arizona and i would like to tint my windows because it is always bright out here. I had a question about what you posted for
Arizona Undef/35% Film/Any/Any/1998
Does that mean that I could tint the back window on my Fiero as dark as I wanted? And that only 35% visible light can go through on the driver and pass side windows? What about the windshield? I have seen people put a brow, like you say, on the front windshield around here and would like to do that to my car aswell. You put that in the windshield it is undefiende. Does that mean that somebody could tint their whole windshield? I'm not saying that I would do it but just curios to know. Also, is it leagal here in Arizona to tint my taillights. I would like to tint them aswell, only if it is legal, I wouldn't like to get pulled over and get a ticket for tinting my taillights. Just curios to know about tinting my car in Arizona as I have not done any tinting to it because i don't know what the tinting laws are here. You would think that there would be no tinting laws here in Arizona because of how the sun is always out and so bright outside.

The acts and regulations are vague and sometimes superceded by another section. In this state you almost have to read each and every rule and regulation to see if one section is not being affected by another section.
In regards to your windshield I really would not do any changes, and if you do tint it no more then 4" or 10cm from the very top downwards.
There are numerous lawsuits in regards to a person whom being involved in an accident which was no fault of his was found partially or wholely responsible because of the tint on the front of his windshield. The lawyers for the other party will always state that the entire incident could have been avoided if the other driver would have taken steps to avoid the incident but did not due to his vision obstruction caused by the illegally installed tint. In reality the tint had nothing to do with the cause, but as the driver of the tinted vehicle can not prove this, then some percent of blame is always assessed upon him.
British Columbia haven state run mandatory insurance and is infamous for finding both parties at fault for accidents whether 25/50/75 or even 95% the cause, thus leaving a small percentage for the other driver.
As for front windows on the drivers and passanger side you must combine the factory glass with the tint to get your overall v.l.t. An example of this is the factory glass is already tinted about 72% meaning that it blocks out 28% of the visible light. We now add a 50 % tint to this and the overall v.l.t. is now 36%. Readings are always expressed as v.l.t. meaning how much of the visible light is being transmitted from the outside to the inside.
So in Arizonia to be completely legal you can really only use a 50% tint which is compounded to the already 72% v.l.t. which will give an overall v.l.t. of 36% with 35% being the cut off point where you are either ticketed or sent on your way.
As for the back window you can have absolutely anything including spray painting the window black if you so desired. However this is where it gets tricky, under the regulations you must be able to have a clear view to the rear of your vehicle and if you do not have a back window in which can see through, then the vehicle must be equipped with rear view mirrors on both sides of the vehicle.
This is really no different then a truck driver whom has no back window but has rear view mirrors on both sides of his vehicle.
As in every case common sense always dictates, if your car is in hot bright sunlight with a open sunroof and you use moderate to dark tint, you will more then likely have no problems. However if you are driving around with the same tint in cloudy dark rainy nights and the tint is so dark that you are barely visible from the outside of the vehicle, I would expect that you will be on the receiving end of a violation ticket.
On the fiero's I would never use more then 50% on the front and 35% on the rear windows. Even though 35% seem lght for the rear when you are backing up at night with dim reverse lights it is barely possible to see what is behind you.
i did some tinting 2day... i bought some "Gila" 20% from autozone for $10 and a tinting kit for $10. had extra so i did my tails also...
i only finished the one window as there was no space on the passenger side (but i do have it cut already). the streaks and lines are on the outside of the window, they are actually scrathes in the glass from something...
Those scratches are from your dew wipes or those little brushes inside the door.
