I'm currently redoing the rusted out trunk corners and will be welding in new sheet metal so what I need to know is what gauge sheet metal is used in the trunk corners so I can buy the right stuff.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Steve

I'm thinking 20ga or 22ga. Most autoshops sell small panels of galvanized body metal for this kind of repair. Be careful welding that stuff. You need lots of ventilation because the fumes from galvanized are poisonous. I had them get under my mask and into my eyes one time. Very painful night. It was my grandmother that tiped me to an old trick of warm teabags over the eyes to suck out the poison and sooth the pain of welders flash. Guess my grandfather had it more than a few times.

Why bother with galvanized sheet metal? You're supposed to grind or sand away the galvanizing in way of the welds, then the welds need priming/painting. Why not use plain ol' mild steel sheet? BTW, most of the Fiero's original sheet metal had a galvanize-like coating under the paint, and you need to sand that away before welding, too. If not, the welds ain't worth a flip.

Thanks for the response guys.

I was able to borrow a sheet metal gauge and found it to be about 20 or 21 gauge.

I was planning on getting a supply of un-galvanized sheet steel for the repairs.

And yep, grind off the old galvanizing from the Fiero steel and make nice pretty welds.
