Hey all,

I have 5000 miles on the new crate ZZ4 350 (carbed), Within the last couple of weeks I noticed what I thought was the infamous exhaust leak ticking. I figured somthing had arttled itself loose and just needed to be tightened. I had it on my V6 for a long time and I thought it was the same sound. I went to the muffler shop today and they could not find any leaks. The guy said that it sounded like it was coming from the top end of the motor.

So I've got a ticking coming from the top end on a new motor, 5000 miles in. Oil pressure is good, mileage seems down some, and sounds like a little ticking.

Any suggestions? Ideas as to what it could be?

Thanks
Todd

I have known a couple guys that have had one or a couple bad lifters off the getgo. Most have been using aftermarket cam and lifter packages.

Well unhook your alt and waterpump to rule them out, have someone push in on the clutch to make sure its not the throwout bearing.

Lifter would be my guess. Use the stethescope to trace the source of the sound.

If you haven't changed the oil and filter recently, go ahead and do it again. New engines tend to have a lot of left behind crud from the build process. A fresh oil change may be all it needs.

Out in left field here--I would first say a lifter usually, but ,had this happen in the last couple of weeks, check all your plugs and wires--just a hunch on a new engine..

Thanks all, I will give the oil change a try tonight and try to pick up a stethoscope

The sound was definately very minimal at first a couple weeks ago....it got progressively more noticeable - which is why also I thought it might be an exhaust bolt loosening or something to that extent.

I'm assuming that I should not be driving it at all in the meantime

You might have a bad spark plug wire that is arcing to ground. Look at your engine in the dark to see if you see anything. Had that once on my 68 camaro. Just an idea.

This kind of tick happened on my rebuilt 4.9. I used a stethescope and traced it to the distributor and after changing the cap, rotor and just about to do wires and ICM I stepped back and double checked the routing on my wires and discovered one wire just hanging loose that had fallen off the spark plug. Reattached and it cured the tick.

Just takes a quick look and Good Luck,

Dan

Sometimes you can dump a can of SeaFoam into the crankcase and that'll clear up the ticking--the lighter-weight oils clean gunk out of the lifters.
