My spedo went dead on me yesterday, and on investigating I found the VSS sitting there nice and shiney--with no connector on it or wires to it.

Since it worked when I picked it up from the shop, about the only thing I can guess is the wire was routed incorectly (they had to remove it to do a little exhast work), got wrapped up in an axle and torn loose.

I cant find the connector or wires hanging loose under there ANYWHERE. (and really havent the foggies where to start looking. I've just been hunting for out-of-place wires)

I'm hoping somebody can get pics of there the harness exits the firewall, and the routing to the VSS, and maybee that way I can find them and splice on a new connector.

Thanks

Edit......I found 2 broken wires, they are a green and a black and are routed thru the same plastic sheilding as the alternator wires, then it looks like they(did at one time) exit that run of shielding, and LOOKS like they may have pointed in the right generel direction to be the VSS wires. Are these them? and which is the right terminal and which is the left?

now you've been around long enough to know to tell us what year/engine...

but for my 85 GT it's purple with a white stripe and a solid yellow wire going to the sensor.

find those and i'll get dirty again and tell you which one goes where.

EDIT ps, the green and black wires probably go to your AC compressor clutch

...usually the VSS wires are purple and yellow, they are run inside the engine harness and go throught the firewall with the group of wires on the drivers side and connect up to the C203 plug inside of the car, which in turn feeds the speedo. Techanically, it does not really matter which wire goes to which side.

Sorry, had to work

Yup--86 GT, 2.8 engine, 4-speed manual tranny.

I picked up a new connector/pigtail at the u-pull on the way home and had a good long look at the way that one was routed. (84 2.5 4-speed). Nothing even remotley similar on my car, unless one of the previous owners has been playing. BUT, I am pretty sure I can now find the wires in the buljead connector, and just start tracing from there.........after it cools down. 3rd degree burns from the manifolds just dont seem attractive right now

Found it and all fixed.......what a PITA to get at. They were the purple/yellow, and had broken off right up almost even with the top of the alternator. On this car, they run thru the alternator harness shielding.

My guess was right--I re-traced my route and found my old plastic shielding and some familiar-colored mangled wires on the road. A couple of zip ties made sure THAT wont happen again.
