I have a Haynes manual, but it doesn't show where the ignition module is physicaly located.
Does anyone know?

Between the coil pack and the engine block. Check out the Ogre's Cave for a write up.

As noted, see my cave...

The Hayne's book is useless on the DIS engines. Don't trust much of anything it says. You'll also want to read the 700 series TBI article for future reference.

Also note... IF the module still has the shield plate, DON'T lose or discard it. If the Shield is missing... head to the salvage yards and find a brick that is complete ASAP. Better yet, check later year GM cars with R and U vin L4. The mounting tray was upgraded into a significantly more effective cooling device. See Here.

If the shield is missing, the seals on the coil terminals will be over compressed. I have seen this actually damage the module by blowing out the wall on the module that surounds the seals.

I have some images I'll be adding to the DIS article when I get time. I recently had mine apart and grabbed a few shots when I did.

Ivisited your site earlier and I appreciate the info. Luckily, I have another 88 coupe parts car.
After reading your info, I think I have a bad MAP. It backfires when trying to start. It idles ok when it does start, but has no power and will backfire if I give it gas, until it warms up, I know it needs a complete tune up. The sparkplugs are all shot and the wires look original. All the filters are filthy. The previous owner just drove it until the altenator went, then parked it for 2 years. The good thing is that it doesn't smoke at all, and has no wierd noises.

May want to run some good gas/cleaner through it--after 2 years its probally not the best to be running at this point, your plug wires , ect as you mentioned will probally clear up most of the backfiring, might want to time it as well, hope this helps some..
