I have been reading some posts about fuel pressure regulators but I still have a few questions

I am currently using the stock 1985 4cyl fuel pump, and an Edelbrock 750cfm carb. (on a SBC 350)

1) Do I need a fuel pressure regulator at all with the 4cyl fuel pump?
2) If I do need a fuel pressure regulator I will get the bypass style. I have read that Mallory (650-4309) makes one that works well. Anyone using another one and are happy with it?
3)Would it be better if I used a 1686 V6 pump with a fuel pressure regulator instead of the 4cyl?

Thanks for you help

I used an edelbrock fuel regulator with the 4 cyl. fuel pump. It does not have the return, but works fine. I have an edelbrock 600 cfm carb-#1406. You definitely need one, since fuel pressure needs to be around 6 lbs. as I recall.

I've got an Edelbrock 650 on a ZZ3 crate. Running the 4 cyl. pump with a Holley by-pass regulator. Works fine but pressure does creep from time to time, I've heard of that from just about every regulator out there though. You do need a regulator with any fuel pump you use for a carb. The 4 cyl. just doesn't put out as much pressure as the 6 cyl. so it is less stressful on the regulator to bring it down to 4-6 psi. I've also heard that not running a by-pass regulator on the high pressure pumps will put a good deal of load on them, not sure if thats true but I decided not to take my chances.

Stick with the 4cyl pump so it only has to be reduced from 15 to 5 psi roughly.
The V6 pump is 40+psi.

I have been running an off-the-shelf electric pump mounted external to the fuel tank for over 3 years with no problems on a 416 rwhp 383 SBC with a 780 CFM (3310 Holley). Pump is designed for carbed cars and puts out 4-6 psi all the time, no bypass. You can read about it on my web site, this fuel pump stuff is located here about 2/3 of the way down the page. http://64.17.190.253/fiero%20stuff/Fiero%20HTM%20files/other_stuff.htm
The approach is a hill-billy one that has worked great. The pump is very quiet, especially since the engine makes so much noise....

No fuel starvation even during "spirited" driving or autocross.
