I might be wrong but from what I understand, they had a performance, and an economy tranny. Just a matter of which one it has. My 84 SE 4speed rapped out at around 3400 to 3500 on the interstate so I assumed I had the performance tranny. First gear was so steep, it basicly just got ya rolling, then ya had to shift to 2nd. I've since put in a 5spd.

I might buy a 1984 Fiero off ebay (sport coupe... Not SE)
But only want to buy it if it has the 3.32 gear ratio transmission
Can anyone tell me what gear ratio is more common in the 1984 sport coupes?
I can't say which is more common in sport coupes specifically, however, I can tell that everything I've heard on the forum says there are about 8,000 3.32 trannies total, and over 190K 4.10's.
So from a statistical standpoint, as far as your chances go, it is probably the 4.10. Without driving it though, if the RPO codes are gone I don't know what else to tell ya. Also, don't know if it helps but I have a thing on the trans that are in fiero's and it says the 3.32 is a MY8, and the 4.10 is a M19, I don't know if that's the RPO code but maybe it will help.
If nothing else ask the owner how many RPM is spun on the highway around 60. if it was low 2K it's a 3.32 if it's high 2K then obviously it's 4.10

I was wondering if anyone knows if most 84 sport coupes are 3.32 ratio or 4.10
I would assume that "sport coupe" would have the 4.10 final drive; the lower gearing would have more entertainment factor around town for one thing. Not to mention that the econo/3.32 trannys are relatively rare.
Ask the seller if he/she knows approximately what RPM it would turn if driven (in 4th) at 60mph. Unless it has some grossly over/under sized tires, the 4.10 tranny would put the engine near or slightly above 3k rpm at that speed. The 3.32 tranny would spin it somewhere in the 2,250-2,500 rpm range.
Originally posted by buddycraigg: i almost bought an 84 a week ago, non-AC car, 1 owner. no power anything. car was ordered to be fuel effecent. but it still had the 4.10
And to my amazement it really is efficient despite the 4.1 final. I get 32 mpg.

I had heard the 4:10s were a lot more common but those numbers don't add up right. The 3:32 and the 4:10 were only on the 84s and there were a total of 136,940 Fieros made in 84. So it can't add up to 198K trannies.
