Probubly a striped gear, what ever the problem is, your going to have to replace or rebuild them. You can disconnect the single power wire up front if you havent allready shut the power off. (for parts try Rodney Dickman or Fiero store).

press and hold the headlight switch in the OFF position,

if that doesn't help,

turn the lights off,
then turn on JUST the marker lights,
then turn them off.
if that works then you need a new headlight switch.

otherwise it's probably the isolation relay

Only a suggestion, but you might not want to sink a lot of money into that system. There are (3) relays in that system and (depending on where you can find them) could cost you $20 or $30 each, not including any repairs you might later do to the motors. Before you do, take a look at replacing the system with the second generation headlight system from an '87 or '88 - it is MUCH better and a fairly easy thing to do. This was probably the best thing I ever did to my '85 .....

If you do a SEARCH, you'll find a TON of info on the subject ....

Echo ---on what Buddy said, last one turned out to be the isolation relay. Have another 86GT that I have to hold the switch down --or they won`t close all the way. It looks tempting to fool with the knobs on the top--cause if you tap them they will close-open sometimes , but don`t do it that way, you`ll end up buying or rebuilding new headlamp assembly`s.
