W-A-T-E-R P-U-M-P- P-L-U-G. I think I've found the answer:
It appears that the threads in the pump are slightly different than the standard 1/2" pipe plug.
It seems that the fixture that came with it, (Hose Fitting) has threads that seem to be worn down and not as pronounced, (tall and sharp) as a standard pipe plug.
I'm going to turn down, (lathe) a plug to the point that it compares to the hose fixture that came with the pump. We'll see ...............

Are you talking about the heater inlet fitting? If so, then for what it's worth I put a 1/2" NPT pipe plug in mine. It fits fine, as long as the threads in the water pump are clean. For that, I used a 1/2" NPT thread tap.

I took my new water pump to the hardware store and found the plug right there in a bin in the plumbing section. Fit perfectly. Or I could have re-used the plug in the old water pump, but it was ugly and rusty.
