.........and I found some washers used as a spacer, under a bolt I removed. What are these washers for and if used as a spacer, what's the proper thickness of the spacer needed?
Thanx !!

There is sealant that is made specifically for water pumps - you can just ask for it at the store (water pump sealant).

As for the washers, not sure about this - but I can guess is that someone in the past lost the bolt that is suppose to fit there and used a different one. This new bolt was probably too long, so they used the washers to compensate.

Like Mickey Moose said "Water Pump Sealant" works well, but, if you can find it I prefer using Hylomar HPF (made by Permatex, about $6 a tube) it is a gasket/sealing surface dressing that never really hardens. I have done three waterpumps on different cars over the past year and none of them leak. The best thing about this stuff is that it is really easy to clean up because it doesn't harden like silicone/RTV type sealants. If you want to try it your best bet would be to check NAPA.

I use permatex ultra blue rtv for sealant on everything, never have any leaks. the key to it is to only use paper thin coats, you don;t want big blobs squishing out. this goes for every sealant.I usually wipe it on with my finger with the gasket on the cardboard form the box, then do the same on eht surface not getting the side that I put the sealant on.

Now for you spacer, is that per chance on the bolt that sits about the 1100 position on the pump on the top, that goes thru an open area then into the block?that doesn;t have anything in that void, the bolt just sits there in the open. bugged the hell outta me, but that is the way it should be.
