my 86 gt had the ses light come on the other day. i did the diagnostic thing with the paperclip and it didnt work, it wouldn't go into the mode. i did some research and found i need a new ecm. i also heard i need to check several circuits with an ohmeter or i could end up frying the new one too. does anyone know how to do this or if i really need to?

The Fiero ECM is a pretty rugged unit. Failing to enter the diagnostic mode could be a problem with the wiring to the ECM, and you wouldn't want to find it after paying for a new unit.
If it really is the ECM, it could be a bad solder joint around the connectors. If you feel a little crazy, you could open it up and try to repair it yourself.

while it certainly can be external to the ecm, odds are as good or better it is the ecm itself. they can crack the land patterns on the circuit board from years of heating/cooling and vibration, solder joints can crack, and face one fact, there are only so many times a transistor can switch in it;s lifetime before it goes bad.
Rockauto has them for less than the cost of an ignition module. it;s not like the old days when they cost 600$....

Ive never had a GM ecm go bad,but considering the cars age it's possible. You might try useing a can of compressed air to blow out the terminal, lots of dust and debrie can get in there.make sure your jumping the correct pins. Will the light go off.How does the car run.Need more info....

i just bought the car 2 weeks ago and it came with a parts car. the ecm in the parts car is fine. i was just gonna switch em. the fiero online service guide says i need to check the resistance in the ac relay, TCC, and cooling fan relay. i dont know ho to do that. the car seems to run fine, it has a high idle, around 900-1200, im gonna clean the IAC, and i need a new oil pressure sender.
