1987 Fiero GT 2.8 Auto, 192,000 miles

I was driving along at about 30 mph when she just shut down on me. No bang, crunch, donk, clink or any other sound, It just shut off like someone turned the key off. When I pulled off the distributor cap I found the center electrode (that contacts the rotor) ground down all the way to the plastic. This turned out to be a Wells rotor that didn't fit correctly. So I changed the cap and rotor(with AC Delco parts), while I was at it, I also changed the coil and ignition module because they were covered under warranty anyways. She still doesn't start. I know I have fuel because I smell it at the tailpipe after excessive cranking. The only thing in the ignition system that I haven't changed today is the pickup coil, but that was only replaced not even 6 months ago, and the ECM.

What do you guys think? I'm ready to toss some extra firecrackers from the 4th in the gastank and smile as I watch her burn. SOMEONE SAVE MY FIERO!!!

I'm pretty sure that you already know the answer to the question about replacing the pick up coil. After you check all of the fuses carefully to make sure that none are blown and if you still can't get the car to run you will probably will need to replace pick up coil. Be sure to get the engine to TDC # 1 piston. That's my take on the situation, maybe we can get some other folks to chime in here for you.

Did you change the wires? Especially the coil wire.

Mine did that and she was out of gas. 20 year old gas floats aren't all that accurate. :}

NOpe....haven't changed the wires since she shut off. Also she has enough gas in it...That's what I though the problem was to begin with but I filled her up and still not starting....now I have a full tank of gas in my paperweight. Anyways...I'm an ass for not checking the fuses, I'll do that tomorrow and let you guys know what happens...Any other suggestions while I'm waiting for the sun to come up?

Module was my first thought but he says he changed it. Unless the replacement was a used one or bad new one.

Sorry...my ISP went down when I tried to edit my post. What I meant to say was, as Dodgerunner has said, modules can have a nasty habit of not being good, even when new!! Depends on the make..I fitted two 'high energy ones, and still didn't sort it. Fitted an ACDelco one, and off it went!!.Proper fitting of the module is very important, including the correct amount and type of electrolytic grease, and making sure the earthing screw that holds the module to the mounting plate is doing the job properly.I must admit I jumped the gun and didn't read right through the post. The symptoms were exactly the same as what happened to me.

Are all the ignition parts your replacing --made by wells? Did you use heat sink (white compound) as mentioned above for the modual, you don`t need a ton of it , just enough to say there`s some on there, a nice film will do, agreed on above , ac/delco ignition parts are the way to go.....

well....i dont know what I did...but I fixed it.

First thing in the morning I dove under the dash with my test light and started poking around...all the fuses were good. So I tried to start it because I noticed that clock was wrong, so I wanted to set the time...and she started right up! Cars are so confusing...thanks guys!
