What size compressor do you have? Air sanders typically require "larger" compressors for continuous operation due to their higher CFM requirements. I f you r compressor isn't large enough the operation of the sander will be intermittant and you won't be happy. The advantage of the air tool is that the air stream cleans the moving parts of dust.

I use both electric and air sanders.

The major difference between the two is the speed of the sanding pad. With electric, you're stuck at one speed whereas the air sander is adjustable. If you don't have a large compressor, you can do a little at a time or as long as the compressor holds a good air pressure. But, if you do have a smaller compressor, don't overwork it, either. Let it catch up and cool, and a fan blowing on the compressor head is also a good idea for long work sessions.

If you are not that experienced in doing paint or body work an electric vari speed random orbit sander would be your best bet, using a air powered sander runs at a higher rpm and and will remove alot of material fast and possibly too much.
Also the electric sander will create less dust.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck !!!

I got this one from Harbor Freight. I just used it for wet sanding after painting, but it would work just fine for before as well. Similar to much more expensive models, just cheaper. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=4196
