Hey guys..I know this is going to be one of thoes questions your going to ask yourself "Why would you want to do that" but here it goes anyway... Got an 84 2m4 been sitting for almost 6 years with a cracked head and other block/piston problems.. It also when it was running had a nasty problem that I think was computer related.. would run just fine then it was like you turned off the key.. if you left it sit on the side of the road for a few min it would start and run just fine.. Im going to rebuild a Fiero 4 Cyl (not the one thats in it since the block has problems and I no longer have all the parts to put it back together since ive moved after I took it apart) and I want to get the computer out of the car.. I need to know what Im going to have to do besides getting a carb for it.. I know the distrib is going to have to be different.. need to know which one I need and any other part I need to swap out that the computer controls... I know it would be easier to get one of Archie's kits and put a V8 in it but the pocket book wont allow it and I miss my car..going to be a long road back to driving it since its been sitting for so many years and I didnt have it 100% back when the head cracked.. still needed rear brakes done and had wire problems from mice (which im sure have only gotten worse since it sits outside under a car cover)..
So any help you smart guys can give me I will welcome... Thx Fierotaz84 '84 2m4 loaded 36k original miles

Seems like I used to see a Holley intake come up on Ebay from time to time that allowed you to go carb'ed, but I would think that would kill your gas mileage.
You should save your self the trouble and buy my 88.
------------------ 1988 2.5 5 speed (4 sale) 1986 2.8 turbo 4speed 1963 Female that just doesn't understand
There is an intake designed for the racing version of the iron duke, the SD4. The intake is designed to take a 4-bbl carb. GM Part number 10038470, $225 + shipping from GM Parts Direct.
Thanks Jax184 and fierohoho for your thoughts on the computer problem.. Will keep them in mind for my next one for the wife but When this one hits the road the computer Will not be in the car.. Im past the point of careing why the computer is acting up.. the cars been sitting for 5 years..
Thanks srat110 and RWDPLZ for the intake idea. Didnt think about having to change the intake.. figured the Distributor would have to be changed and read some place on here that the fuel pump has to be changed as well...
And as far as the fuel mileage Ive got a bigger fuel guzzler that I drive every day.. 5 mpg.. (18 wheels and 80K lbs).. This is just gonig to be my play toy.. If I had the cash I would have put one of Archie's V8 kits in..
Ok the Intake needs changed.. What else needs changed and where can I find the parts..
The fuel pump should be fine actually, the iron duke pump makes around 9-14 psi, which is right around what a carb needs. If you had a V6 you'd need to change the pump, as they run at a MUCH higer pressure.
For carbs I'd look at Holley's 350cfm 2-bbl or the 390cfm 4-bbl
For the distributor, maybe one from an older iron duke? Never looked into it that far before
Don't. The 390 is marginal for the 2.8. I just went through all this with dyno tuning. I had to use the smallest accellerator pump nozzle available from Holley, and #512 on the primary jetting with #52 secondary jetting.
You will want a 2 barrel. The 350 Holley will be marginal too, and you will likely want the Webber.
The SD4 intake is a really good idea.
As for the fuel pump, you want no more than 7 psi max. 4-5 is sufficient for a small motor. Try the Holley blue regulator.
You are right that life without the computer is very nice. You need, however, a racing mechanic who knows carbs to set you up. I needed a dyno tuner with mine. Beware of going too rich.
Good luck.

Just go to the junkyard and get an intake manifold off of a 1980-83 GM vehicle with a 2.5 (citation, omega, pheonix, etc)....... and use a non-electric GM varijet carburetor....... while your there, get the HEI distributor off the same vehicles

Actually 1977 thru 1983 2.5L engines in Citation Omega Pheonix Sunbird...\ Skyhawk...\ 1981 and earlier Monza..... / Firenza.. / S-10/S15 pick-ups and SUV's 1982-1983 Firebirds and Camaros (Yes they came with the 2.5L as a base engine)
The carb requires 4-6 psi with 7-8 psi being the max. Just use a fuel pressure regulator to bring it down. You will need the HEI distributor and Intake manifold from the donor car. The Holley 350cfm 2-bbl should be fine. The Vari-jet is OK but not really a "performance" carb.
