How do I remove a "STEEL" steering rack bushing?

Well, I think I isolated the rattle or noise I've been hearing on my Formula
https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/074124.html

Now, can anyone explain or give me some information on how to remove a "STEEL" bushing out of a steering rack (1988). While having the rack removed from the car for suspension work this spring I had wanted to replace the rack bushing, but could not figure how to remove it.....
Any help/links?

Thanks,
Michael

I know on my 87 I had to completely take apart the rack and then I used a long steel rod to knock it out from the other side. I know the 88 rack is different so I dont know if you have to do it the same way or not.

It almost appears as though the bushing is pressed into that housing. It doesn't look like a needle nose vice grips would work with this ?? But thanks for idea......

Dude, you asked this like 3 months ago.

As I said in your other thread, you have to take apart the rack and knock it out from the back side, or weld a flat piece of steel to it so you have some "ears" to knock it out with. Either way the rack has to come apart.

I got a good one... get a bad or used tie rod end. put it on the rack on the end that has the bushing. Rotate the steering input shaft till the tie rod end is fully retracted. Carefully weld the tie rod end to the bushing, do a little at a time as not to heat the rack too much. Rotate the input shaft to the right and it could push the bushing out. The key is, that this will only work if the bushing doesn't need several hundred pounds to extract it. If it does, your in a bigger mess then before.
