I'm rich!! I've struck oil!! Well, maybe not that much, but my Fiero is doing it's best impersonation of an oil well.
I've got a leak from around the front of the engine (water pump side) and I'm having a hard time finding where it's coming from.
Are there any recurring problem areas that I should check first?

My guess is it's the oil pan gasket right behind the harmonic balancer or maybe the timing chain cover. Maybe the oil pressure sending unit tube?

It's bad enough that I can't park it in my driveway without a drip pan. From what I can see, no oil is getting on the alternator belt and it's not burning oil. It appears to be coming from the front, so I don't think it's a valve cover gasket, either. (although I think the rear one leaks a little as well)

Any ideas on where to start? It almost looks like it might be easier to drop the cradle, just because everything is so grimey and greasy.

There's also the oil pressure sender, which has a tendancy to gush when it fails.

Get some ultraviolet marking dye for the crankcase at the auto parts store, about $10 bucks and a couple cans of engine cleaner. I did this and used a "party" light from the hardware store for $4 bucks, used it at dusk as it was not strong enough to see the marking dye in full sunlight. You will be able to see exactly where the leaks are coming from.

The dye sounds like the way to go as jetman said. Your right , it is just about as easy to drop the cradle to get all the gunk off everything, did this on the last swap, well---did it about 10 times before it was finally clean enough to paint , not sure of your mileage/condtion --but in that general area you describe, your oil pan actually rises quite a bit---right behind the harmonic balancer/dampner & oil tends to collect in that little galley, then leaks down, so could be all 3 things you mentioned.

I've got about 165,000 miles on the clock. My oil pressure gage still works, so it may not be the sender, but at least that's fairly easy to check.

I'll check out the dye. I'd heard about dealers using it, but didn't know it was readily available at auto parts stores.

If it is the crank seal--and thats what I``m thinking as Jake_Dragon said above---misewell do the pan gasket & timing chain cover while you have it open, reason for thinking this --is last week I pulled the dampner off and that galley where the crank seal is was filled with oil--this engine had 76K on it.

hose the engine off (preferable with a high-pressure spray) and then watch it for a day or so to see what gets oily first.
