Time to resurrect the RED Distributor caps. Most commonly used are Wells DR2012-G and Conrad DR-2012-G. The GM 4.3L V6 used in Syclone/Typhoon used a similar distributor. MSD has a cap/rotor that works (pictured below). MSD PN# 8430
Grey is the stock distributor cap color. V6's had RED wires through to 87. The Red distributor caps just match the plenum, valve covers and wires better.

I have one of these on my Formula now. It works on the 2.8, even though it says it's for the 4.3. And yes, OEM was gray. But these LOOK more like OEM, since everything else is red.

Thanks for the tip! I tried getting a red one (the Wells or Conrad I believe) through Autozone, but they are no longer red.
**EDIT** I just checked Summit Racing and they have the set for only $22.00. Good deal.
Yep, Summit is a great place....$22.00 is cheap. I called my local auto store, Winchester Auto and they said it would be $30.00. I guess with Summit's shipping it would be about the same for me. By the way, I got the Conrad one at Autozone a year ago and at that time he said they were going to discontinue it.

Am I missing something? Why can't you paint the distributor cap any color you want? You can buy the Chevy Orange paint anywhere, what's the big deal? Ed

Sure, you can paint your distributor cap. But paint flakes and peels off, and it's extra work. Buying one made from red material means the finish won't come off, and you save the time and hassle of having to paint it. Plus it's a high quality piece with brass terminals, so it's a good swap no matter what the color.
I'd probably paint it "red" rather than "Chevy Orange" anyway. There's nothing on a Fiero that's Chevy Orange from the factory.

A crack in the paint acts just like a crack in the cap, when damp or wet it will miss-fire and arc causing a miss firing engine. My next door neighbor did this and it resulted in a light show under the hood.
Auto-zone had the MSD red caps also although they swore up and down that it wouldn't fit the V-6. I had proof that the AC Delco part number #D314A fit the 4.3 and 2.8 along with a whole slew of engines from AC Delco web site.
Now if MSD would make a billet distributor for our V-6 engines!

Correct! However...they charge $8.95 per order for "handling" so I guess it depends on how you look at it. Either way......I will go local cause I can get it faster.
Actually, compared to the red Conrad brand cap & rotor (they're sold together by the way) that Autozone used to sell, they're not much different in price. I paid about $25-26 dollars for the Conrad cap&rotor at Autozone before they stopped selling them.
I figure they're more money because A) supply and demand (not very many people care to have red caps) and B) you paying extra for the brass contacts. (as opposed to aluminum)

The blue ones that the Fiero store sells are $13 or $14 for both cap and rotor and they have brass terminals. So we have to pay $10+ more just for the color? I want a red cap too, but not that bad.

Is there really anything wrong with using the Wells Gold Line red distributor cap? It too has brass terminals and looks just like the MSD cap, as far as I can tell. Heck it may be made by the same people for all I know.
Yes I'm aware the "regular" Wells caps use aluminum and are best avoided.

Have you found any lately? They are discontinued, and why we're suggesting alternate brands. (That's what I had used before)
I've seen them at Farm & Fleet, but if they're discontinued its possible the ones I saw were just the last remnants of their stock. I'll have to look the next time I am shopping there.
Checker Auto Parts quoted me $39 and a 3 day wait for the red MSD 8430 set. Autozone's price is $21 for the same MSD 8430 and only takes 1 day to deliver to the store.

I checked Farm & Fleet a couple days ago, and they had tons of the Gold Line DARK GREY caps, but just one red one (which I bought). I can't see any difference other than the color, and also the grey ones are made in Mexico.

I bought a "Blue" one from the Fiero store a while back before I bought my Red one from Summit. The one I got from the Fiero store had Aluminum terminals that corroded rather quickly with use. My new Red one has brass terminals and they have held up much better.

Red or gray. Blue would look kinda funky with all the red in the engine bay. I guess you could match it in by putting blue wire loom on everything.........lol.

I just ordered mine from Autozone this morning although I had to look it up for the girl working there / 22.00 plus tax will be here Tuesday. You know getting parts for cars that have a different engine etc is getting hard to do because they always want a year and model etc. I called a wrecking yard a while back and said I wanted to see if he had a motor from gm with TPI injection and he insisted on having a year. I used to have fun with telling them I had a PInto with a 302 engine in it and they would try to look it up and then I would tell them the engine came out of a mustang.

My local AutoZone had two of the Taylor Gold cap kits in stock PN# 918133 but they were both GRAY! They said they don't make them in red any longer. Don't order this item if you want red. Go with the MSD.

I bought Msd and Taylor from Lopers Performance in AZ. I checked all the others , Summit etc. before ordering from these folks. Very competitve, NO tax and Free shipping. Loper's has a lot of stores. Google the name to get a phone #. The funny thing was, they ordered the parts from their warehouse in Ca. and then re-shipped them to me from AZ to CA.

My original cap was tan colour. And I was never able to find another. I have used AC delco, Black or grey, and more recently am using the Wells Red, more for its' brass contacts.
