I've found quite a bit of info in searches but I'm trying to find info for a co-worker who was asking,
Does anyone have pics of a Carbed Caddy 4.9? If you've done one, can you give me some details? I understand you can usually modify the distributor or modify another HEI but I'm confused on the carb setup. I've heard about the use of a 500CFM Holley but are there other options and is there an intake manifold available that is preferred?
Any tips would be a big help.

I used a brand new holley 500 cfm carb and put an electric choke, vent baffle, spring loaded needle and seat and dropped the jet size by 2 sizes. It runs very well. I used the stock 4.9 pfi intake manifold with an adapter plate to bolt the carb to. here is a picture when the swap was first completed, before my new ignition or nitrous. and here is a relatively recent picture, i've cleaned up some wireing and stuff since this so keep that in mind.

Thanks for the info. What type of adapter did you use? Did you modify a Holley to TBI type of adapter or is their a "unique" adapter just for this particular application?.
Great setup. I must admit, I've got the SBC on the stand now for my swap but the 4.9's look so nice in the engine bay of the Fiero, I'm impressed.
Did you modify the distributor as well? I beleive I've read of people just modifying a GM HEI and then others that have used the stock 4.9 distributor and aftermarket ignition control.

The adapter that i used was actually already made, my old high school shop teacher had one already made for another project but went a different route so he just gave it to me. It's just made from a 3/4" plate of aluminum but i hear a lot of people just make the adapter out of an aluminum carb spacer. The 4.9 is from a 95 and to get the right distributor i had to buy an earlier one with the flat bottom, mine was from an 85 4.1 eldorado i think, and then take the guts from a early pontiac HEI distributor and put them in , they pretty much just drop right in. you just need to cut the shaft to the right length and drill a new hole for the gear pin.

Here's a pic of my setup. Rochester 2 barrel with an adaptor I made. It is now equipped with an electric choke. The biggest hassel has been getting the 4T60 tv cable hooked up to work properly.

It is a modified HEI. I've done two 4.9s this way. Due to the weather here in the great frozen north I haven't been able to drive it enough to fine tune it.

I hear you! I'm just digging out from our last 14" of snow that we got on Saturday Night.
It's a very interesting swap. (Especially for an old SBC Fiero Kit Car Guy). There is a lot of good swap info out "there". I see that some owners are using different exhaust manifolds from other year DeVille's etc. Are there any "preferred" engine years? (especially if someone were going to go the route of a carb).
It seems like quite a few are using 94 exhaust manifolds / crossovers etc. Is there any year engine that is more of a "drop-in". The more I read, the more I kind of like the idea of the 4.9's looks in the Fiero engine bay. I would'nt be opposed to bolting one up to my 4T60 in my current project.

I just want to mention that there are other options available besides trying to get a carb adapted to work..... GM and Holley TBI's will bolt on the stock manifold without an adaptor. The Holley 2barrel TBI flows a healthy 670cfm. You can find complete Holley stand alone TBI systems (pro-jection) on ebay for around 200 to 500 dollars. On a 4.9 swap I did with a friend, we used a throttle body and computer off an 89 camaro 305...........it worked perfectly on the cad 4.9

I know I did'nt mention it but I've actually been looking around for TBI info as well. By the looks of some of the 4.9's they appeared to have the "same-old" GM TBI. It's a shame, I had an old 670 Holley Projection setup that I bought then never used and eventually sold. Thanks for the "confirmation" on the TBI.
HellYes, I hear you. I have a popup blocker but some of the pages lock/up and shut down my browser on that site. Lots of great info though.
That's another nice option as opposed to the carb.

I went back and forth for quite awhile but decided to go SBC. As luck would have it, a friend that I built a 1988 310cubic inch Chevy 305 for, decided to remove it with about 20,000 miles and go with a big block when he turned the car into a bracket car.
With the shaved heads, Lunati Cam, headers and Intake and carb (we removed the TPI), we dyno'd the car at 293HP so it turned out to be a nice "little 305". I've only had big blocks (except for 1 350 in my last replica) and I was really surprised how well the build went. He wanted to build the original engine and I gave him quite a bit of "grief" about "the little baby 305" but I was really surprised at the results.
It looked like the clearance was way to tight with the Strip Dominator intake so I just removed it for a Performer RPM which "makes it" just fine in the 308 replica.
I'm curious to see the difference in HP with the changes in intake and exhaust but I think it should be a pretty fun ride. I wanted to try to keep HP in the 255-275 range and I just did'nt think I could get the 4.9 "there" with the Delta cam etc for a decent price.
I love the way the 4.9 looks and fits in the car and wanted to try something a little different with this 2nd swap. My last 350 dyno'd at 411HP and it was actually pretty annoying in the Fiero. I wanted to make this one a bit more "reliable", better on gas and something I can just get in a take a nice cruise without getting 6mpg.
Hope your's is comming along good. I love the TBI idea for the 4.9
