Well,

I know that two 4 Speed Econo Muncie transmissions were not as strong as a 5 Speed Getrag.
One failed with catastrophic case failure when just stepping on the gas, not even when shifting.
The other was a hard one two shift

I know that one 4 Speed 4.10:1 Muncie broke when I hit a puddle of water then dry pavement.
Poof, there went the ring gear.

I know that I ran 30K on a 5 speed Getrag and had the spider gear cross shaft break and come through the side of the transmission. It will be used to rebuild another Getrag with bad Syncros.

All of this was beside LT1 V8's. One stock and one mildly built.

Next transmission will likely be an 85-86 4 speed with at least the econo final drive. Maybe even the econo forth gear. With a high torque engine fewer shifts and less tire spin will be faster.

Rick

Gearing is more than just picking high or low. TQ gets transfered to the ground through the tranny gears to the wheels. A higher ratio will be quicker to get through the gear. But when you shift you get less TQ to the ground as the next gear ratio. So by having lower gearing it won't go through the gear as fast and keep the higher TQ on the ground longer. So it is a trade off, more TQ for less time to the ground, or less TQ but longer time to the ground. There is no one size fits all (best). Just changing your tire diamater will change the TQ to the ground. Sometimes you have to match gearing to your tire size. 4x4s run 4.99+ gears just to turn the large offroad tires.

As far as the first question, I don't know what they could handle as I havent blown one up yet. The best way to make one last is to minimize the shock to it. like spinning on wet ground ->hitting dry ground and snap. Dumping the clutch, etc....

I hope this might have been usefull to someone.

i've blown up everythng but a v6 4speed -- only had syncros fail on one of those.. so naturally its the one i trust the most..

for strength i think the getrag and 4speed are a close match the the favor going to whichever one is in better condition internally (gear teeth wearing or surface hardening popping out is bad and will fail eventually)

edit: wow back form the dead - didn't realize this thread was this old and i'd already posted in it
