Whats the cheapest and easiest way to install a rev limiter on a near stock V6? I know you can buy a MSD 6AL but number one there expensive and number two I keep on hearing bad things about them. Any Alternatives??

Thanks,
Jason

There's already one built into the ECM, at least on the '85's there is. I run up against it all the time autocrossing the race car.

stock v6 valve springs do a nice floatjob around 6k, the ecm on I beleive all of them does a fuel shutoff at 6500.

Get a PROM with the rev limit set to what ever you want it to be. Be warned, the GM rev limiter is a little violent when it kicks in. But it is cheaper than the add-on units.

Easiest is don't drive a 6000 rpm, shift to a higher gear before then. Watching the tachometer wont cost you anything.

I agree with Old Lar, even though I haven't had my 2.8l engine past 5200 RPMs. IMO, I don't think I'm missing much !!

While not being an actual rev limiter , you could install a shift light. Proform makes a programable shift light for about $40

I understood that the 88 was the only year V6 without a rev limiter.

Edit - Just looked at my .bin files.
87 fuel cutoff was 5851 RPM. Doesn't pick back up until 4008 RPM. (Those figures are probably the nearest "whole numbers" that TunerCat can interpret. Oher settings are also goofy that way.)

The 88 is set at 1310720 RPM Effectively disabled.

My 87 GT has one. I've hit a couple of times in 2nd gear (scared the crap out of me the first time) at around 60 mph. Horsepower drops off after 4500 rpm, so you don't want to go close to rev limiter limits.

WooHoo! thanks for posting that little tidbit. Not that I plan on livin over 6k, but after the precision balance job I had done, the head work, and soon the finishing up of the exhaust, I don;t want the ecm deciding that I shouldn;t go there. 1st and 2nd just love to shift at 6k in this little 'almost' screamer.
That previous post about the rev limitng effect on the previous years is correct, scares the hell outta ya the first time it hits! my 86 had that "feeeture".
