V6 4 speed '86:

I have removed years of oil, dirt and assorted crud from behind the flywheel. I have installed the main seal and now have a question about the rear camshaft cover. I removed it and cleaned it. There is a groove (albeit eccentric) around the camshaft end that inplies there is an o-ring that seals the cover. Is this true? The shop manual has an annotation to seal with RTV which I am happy to do instead, but is there an o-ring? Thanks.......

As far as I know there is no O ring insalled there.
The fox for oil seepage is to install gasket (cork with metal spacers) , torque to specs, apply RTV liberaly to the outer surface sealing the cap and the head of the attaching bolts to the block.
*Note* the block, end cap and bolt heads must be free of oil and dirt.

the permatex gasket set comes with a cork gasket. that along with a thin layer of permatex ultrablack on both sides of the gasket, and it;s fine.

I recently did mine and use the cork gasket with the metal washers in it, I put RTV Red high temp on both sides but you don't need much, just a thin film.

I prepped the metal surfaces by cleaning them with laquer thinner, it gets all the oil/grease off, installed the gasket and plate, tightened to specs and let it sit overnight to dry, no leaks.

All great info above---especially cleaning & prepping the surface (don`t ask) anyway you don`t need a ton of sealant either as mentioned--a little dab will do ya...
