I haven't figured out what exactly triggers it yet, but every once in a while when I go to make a harder than average turn the tilt column breaks loose and falls to the lowest setting. It usually happens at the most inopportune time, like when I go to turn into a parking lot while holding my coffee in one hand or when I almost missed my turn but saved it by making one of those frantic dives just in time. As best I can figure it only happens on sharper turns, but not necessarily hard turns; the turn into the parking lot was at low speed.

Any clue what's causing this? I don't have the standard wobbly wheel syndrome that you would expect with the tilt column; the wheel is still very tight.

I have had this happen in the past. What I found was a loose bolt. I had to take the sterring wheel of then remove the steering lock plate and then the turn signal switch. After I got all of this out of the way I could see a loose bolt on the tilt wheel clamps. So I torqued down all 4 bolts. I do not remember the size I think it was 7.5 mm or 6.5mm . It was a odd size. It has been a long time back 1989.
Hope this will help you out.

I am very relieved that it isn't something expensive. Seeing how I am in the market for a new sterring wheel anyway, it looks like this is going to have to wait until I can do both at once.

Thanks for the response.
