I have 255 45 17's tires on 17x8 35mm rims in the back and 215 45 17's on 17x7 38mm on front of my 88GT. The suspension is stock with cut springs. I would not put any thing wider than 225's on the stock 7 inch wide rear wheels and 205's on the stock 6 inch front wheels.
On the stock rims --I got away with 235/15`s on rear & 225/15`s up front, it looked ridiculous, so I swapped out for 215/15 up front & 225/15 rear, looks like a 60`s 70`s old muscle car now..

I'm my '88 GT, I've got 225/50/15 front, 245/50/15 rear, Dunlop Sport 8000's on the stock wheels. I wouldn't recommend going any bigger than that. But this combo I have right now actually handles really damn good!
245/50/16's here. Decent traction. But just remember, if the tires don't break loose, something else will. I think I am going to go back to a 225 or 235.

One good point was made which I completely forgot. With the stock front wheels only being 6" wide a 225 is probably the max I could use on it. So with that in mind I'd guess 225/45-15's would be a good choice on the stock rims.
I see Capt Fiero has mounted 245's. Did you do anything special with the offset? Did you have 245's up front too? I'm asking because the "break loose" comment sounds like a 1/4 thing.
Thanks

I honestly don't know the offset of my rims, I know they are a deeper wheel than the stock Fiero rims. I am still using the stock struts. As for the breaking part. I have never actually busted a tranny on the track doing 1/4 mile runs. It has always happened during spirited street driving. It is much harder to spin a 245 than a 225. That extra load is taken up by the tranny.
The short answer, is if you are going to drive the car hard enough to NEED bigger tires to maintain traction, then just beware, the more traction you have, the more load is going to be on the tranny.
maybe someone can word it better than I can.

1992 Pontiac Grand Am GT rims with P245/50/R16 all around and stock ride height in photos. They hooked everytime with a stock LT1 motor and eventually wore out the bands on the stock TH125c auto.
When these tires wear out I have a set of P225/60/R16 that also fit on stock ride height. When those wear out I want to get 19" rims with the following tires:
Front P235/35/R19 Rear P275/30/R19
Sidewall height 3.2" Radius 12.7" Diameter 25.6
Of course the rims I like with show off the big brakes I don't have yet - maybe next winters project (suspension and big brakes)
I am running 265 x 150 x 15 tires (Dunlop Qualifiers) on stock Chromadora rims on an 88 Mera without problems. I think that the 87 Meras with the 15 " lace wheels ran 245 x 50 x 15 all around. These cars are just basically GTs with a different body attached.
