looking into getting 17s for the fiero (86), would 225/45/17s work ok? also, i wanted to do the whole wider rear tire thing, so would the 225/45s be a good wider tire for the rear, or a skinnier tire for the front? and in either case, whats would be a good option for the other 2 tires? im only asking this because ive got a chance to get a set of 225/45 cheap, so im wondering what other 2 tires would be good to match up and be wider or skinnier and fit a fiero.

I have 215 / 45 R17 front on 7-1/2 wide chrome rims with a 40 offset, 235 / 45 R17 in rear on my 87 GT. There was only a pencil width between the rear tire and the shock tower, it was tight. I eventually went with coilovers in the rear. I'm not sure about your 225 / 45, maybe some other members will chime in here for you. In mean time try a search in the forum, link is upper right on the page.

i also have 215/45ZR17 front and 235/45ZR17 rear. stock suspension on the 86se, and lowered 2inches on the 85gt(i've had them on both). i don't think you'd want to go any wider in the front, it starts to get pretty hard to turn, and i have noticed that backing out of parking spaces i rub a bit in the 86SE, didn't in the GT, not sure what the difference is. in the back they are pretty much the limit for stock suspension as well, and my rims have a +42mm offset, so they are about 4mm further out than stock. it's a 7inch wide rim(235 is also the largest tire for the 7inch rim)
imo, the 215/45R17 is a good size for the front, it's wide enough to control the light front end for normal driving, and has roughly the same overall diameter as stock. for the rear, i say go as big as you can. 225/45R17 is pretty close to the max, so if you can get them cheap go for it. there is plenty of room in the rear wheel well for a larger diameter tire, it's only the width that really matters
