I know there have been some questions as to whether the flower master 80 series would fit in Fiero without modifications. I went out on Summits website and got this info on one of the flowmaster 80's -
it says it is 15" inches long, so that sounds like it should fit right in - does anyone know how long the stock Fiero muffler is?

I have one in my car, and it fits. It is a tight fit, but it is there without any mods. I have an 86 GT. I can not tell you the dimensions for the stock muffler... I did not install my flowmaster, but my car did not have a stock muffler anyway.
In Matt Jackson's install, I show cutting the muffler for better clearance.. it really only effects the 88 cradle.
I try not to cut the muffler these days because the size does matter. The area I cut is hollow and does not effect the working of it, but the sound does change. The cut version is raspy at the 3000 plus levels... the non-cut is deeper tone at 3000 and above.

Just all depends on the exhaust used also. TOG is impossible to save the trunk.. SLP, I have saved the trunk, and stock 3800 exhaust is no problem to fit everything.

Spintech makes a fiero specific performance muffler that fits the 88 without mods. I've got one.
do you have the part number and/or any pics? Also does it still have all the spring attachments like from the stock muffler - just curious on that one?
thanks Matt

I had a flowmaster 80's on a stock 86 Fiero GT. Automatic. I had to cut it down 3 inches. To this day this debate has yet to be solved! Some people cut, some people don't.

I think I used the 331SC just google "spintech muffler fiero" and their site will usually be on top. The are made pretty heavy, I expect mine to last a while. Looks just like the one pictured above, but fit an 88 without touching the trunk.

RE: springs, the muffler case is heavy enough to MIG some spring brackets onto it if you want, but if your pipes are welded on, the two hangers are plenty to stabilize everything. Clamped pipes might need the stock springs to secure the muffler, but I believe you're wasting time and energy if the pipes are welded, I was going to add the brackets on mine, but after bolting up the two new hangers on the outlets found the muffler was very firmly in place. I did retain the stock spring mounts on the pipe from the cat to the muffler. The exhaust is strong enough that during my recent tranny swap it was just unbolted at the y-pipe and the hangers and taken off and replaced as a unit incuding the cat, pipe, muffler, and outlets.
I was replacing the whole exhaust w/new free flow cat, so I just cut off the flange below the y-pipe and upsized the down pipe, cat and pipe to the muffler to 2 1/2" . If your cat is old, it wouldn't hurt to put a new free flow one one, the price difference is negligible if you upsize it. If any part of the exhaust is old, it's been my experience that it's a pain to work with and invariably fails there first. It's almost always better in the long run to replace it if you don't want to screw with it again.
I am going to go catless, I can get away with that in Ohio, so I was going to stick with the stock exhaust, that is why I need to know what size it is.
