OK here is what i did i took a engine out of a 86 fiero auto and swapped over a wiring harness from a manual engine includes (harness and wiring). Flywheel from an 87 engine and transmission the munci 5 speed. The engine is in and the car runs good but i am getting a metal on metal noise coming from between the engine and the transmission. I think i have diagnosed the problem to the starter. Is there a difference between a starter for an automatic and a starter for a manual?? The shield that goes on the transmission can that catch the starter or rub on the flywheel or is there a lot of clearance in there to not cause this problem? what will happen if i remove this cover will it cause bad issues? More help would be appreciated.

All fiero starters are the same, and most all 60* starters that I know of too.

The heat shield is a posibility but you would have to describe the noise.

Sure the metal dust shield that covers the bottom of the flywheel is not bent in up by the starter adn rubbing.

I would pull it off and see if your noise is gone.

It's to keep dirt out, covers a big hole. I would keep it on, just a flat piece of metal probably just bent, or needs to be trimed by the starter. Just check it out and you will see. Should be held on my two screws and drop straight down. .
