New member here. I have an 87GT auto that I use for daily commute to college now, 100 miles round trip. My question is, can you swap a Cavalier motor and transmission easily? Would I use the Fiero axles or Cavalier axles? I am interested in this swap for you guessed it, fuel economy. Thanks for any help,

Richard

ya need to give it more time. its been like 40 minutes, most are asleep.

Yes you can swap a cavalier motor, easily depends on year and motor and tranny selection. Im guessing you're thinking of a ecotec? I dont know the first thing about those swaps other than the universal things. I would comment that you could get almost the same mileage and a ton more power out of a 3.8SC, but im sure there are a ton of people on here who know. Also try the search buttons if you want faster results, I dont imagine too many are on right now.

thanks. i'll check back later. i'm not sure of the details involved, mainly wiring issues. as far as fabrication for mounts, my father-in-law has a couple of welders. i just want to do it right, not half way.

What engine specificly are you asking about?
Until they discontinued it in 2001, the Twin Cam variant of the Quad-4 was offered in the cavalier.
That's the 4 cyl 16v DOHC engine, if that's what you're thinking of.

If you are talking about the 3.1 Eurosport, yes it fits. I think the ECM is different, so you best scavenge the Cavalier wiring harness and ECM while you are at it.

Essentially, the 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4 all fit. The 3.1 is the easiest swap, I think.

I had a Cavalier 3.1 and it ran real good. My exwife has it now and it is still running strong since 1990, not burning oil, and she had well over 200,000 k on it.

i was considering an ecotec motor or the 2.4 from the z24. i guess i could have mentioned that...duh! i'm aware of the 2.8 - 3.1 being the same. i'm most interested in a 4 cyl swap for fuel economy. i hate to do it to a GT, but the gas mileage is insane. i'm thinking of either picking up an 87 4cyl 5 speed, or selling mine to buy one. i, like everybody else, prefer the look of the GT though. thanks for the help. honestly.
