I'm not happy. I bought an 88 Formula and bought it knowing it had a small exhaust leak. Unfortunately I listened to the guy and he said it was a $50 fix. Wrong.

I took it to a shop and much of the exhaust is screwed. I priced the entire exhaust at the Fiero Store and it was $1052... How can I get this stuff cheaper? How hard is it to do the entire exhaust work? I'm talking headers to muffler tip.

Thanks

Not sure on the Fiero Store exhaust, but the Fiero exhaust is easy to work on.. easy to drop out and put back. The headers are another thing. They could be cracked or have broken bolts and the like. So, yup, it is a lot of work to change those out. If it was just the exhaust from Cat. back, you can probably handle it in a home shop with limited tools.

Don't forget, too, to try the mall. Someone might have a (good) stock exhaust system sitting around that they'll part with cheaply.

Would probably help if we knew what the issues with current exhaust were. when I did my manifold gaskets, I removed them myself and took them to a muffler shop and had a crack welded and had them weld around the flanges then ported them myself. Whole job was less than $50 for the welding, new gaskets and a few bolts that I had to replace and not to bad to do in the car if you remove the deck lid.

If you have issues with the cat or rusted out pipe or a bad muffler, why not take it to a local shop for repairs. If you do the removal and installation after repairs are made to the exhaust, shouldn't be that bad. at least I wouldn't think so. I would at least get a quote from some local shops before I spent a ton of money on a new exhaust.

I took the car to a shop. The entire exhaust is rusted out. There are holes, before and after the cat, on the tips, muffler, a huge hole on the Ypipe where there is evidence that exhaust putty or whatever it was was used. There is also evidence of a leak on the header. The shop said it would be minimum $500 labor.

I know it needs this stuff because I did take it to a shop, I'm not assuming I need to do some work, I know I need to do the work.

as for the exhaust, pretty straight forward, but the headers can be a problem. There is the chance of breaking a bolt off in the head. That is the main concern. Otherwise, it is just normal mechanical type of stuff.. unbolt, unhook, move stuff around and then hook back up (in a nut shell).

Of course, the V6 has no room to do this work in the engine compartment

But the exhaust itself is easy to drop and swap. Y-pipe is simple also. Look on ebay for parts or contact the Fiero Factory for parts fierofactory@juno.com I think is the email.

exhaust shops seem to allways say "exhaust is shot, you need everything" to me, I think it is a michigan thing. But my friends v6 was left outside without a deck lid for 2 years, and he still used all stock exhuast parts from headers to the cat, we welded (you can clamp it if welding is not available) a flowmaster muffler right under where the cat was. Granted it was loud, but it was loud in a good way for us, I can imagine that a cheap, stock style muffler would work, and be mostly quiet.

My suggestion if you want it done, would be to cut the exhaust off where it levels out at the cat, and have a shop weld a muffler on. Granted it wouldnt be stock, but you can get a decent cat delete out of the deal. That trick should run about 70-90 bucks here in flint at the local muffler man.

I wish I would've gotten pictures of the problems. I've worked on cars, I know that there is surface rust and the like... There are holes, many many holes rusted through. There are areas that were patched and it rusted out around them. We had the car on a hoist and I seen the holes in the ypipe before and after the flange, I could see the build up around the header where it is leaking and such.

I'm getting used parts from members on here and am gonna drop the cradle. Hopefully I can build up the engine a bit. Maybe get some more power, P&P the heads...
