What about installing a low-temp thermostat and a low-temp fan switch?

you want a thermostat. it gets the car up to opertating temp quickly. you get CRAPPY mileage when the car is not up to temp. I understand you are running hot. maybe your existing thermostat is not working correctly. maybe there are air pockets in your cooling system. need to find out what the actual problem is. thermostat is a good thing, you dont want to go without it.

I'm using a 195° thermostat but I swapped a V6 radiator for my leaky 4 cyl one. My gas milage is not that good because of it I suspect. Guess I need a bigger motor to go with that radiator.... yeah, that's it.

If you can get a pressure tester, here in the states, stores like Auto Zone will loan them for free.

Leave the thermostat in for sure. BTW Stant has a new thermostat out for the Fiero that is much better. It is called a super stat part # 45819. It is a little pricey something like &11,50.

On my stat I have drilled 2-4 1/8 in holes in the side. Its an old racing trick. As your engine will heat up much faster when you race it than the stat will open. Plus it lets out air. It will let the coolent flow a little bit before it opens all the way. Besides I can't stand when a cheap $$ part like a stat fails and cooks an engine. Mind you being in Vegas with 128 deg days in the summer I need ALL the help I can get with cooling. Not all cars like to run cooler temps but mine does.

Removing the thermostat does not make the car run cooler (unless it is defective) it just makes it take longer to reach operating temperature.

That would depend on the outside temperature.

Little late;but, Make sure you followed procedures for "burping"; that is : place car nose down hill, remove thermostat, idle engine--watch coolant level for "bubbling"-as level goes down-add more coolant, until no more air escapes--re-install thermostat and cap. I know this is subject to comments;but,it has worked for me and it follows the GM manual advice. Dewey

The big problem with heat is not the thermostat. Your thermostat will be open after only a few minutes of running on a hot day. It stays open after that.
The big complaint most people have is that they're sitting in traffic and their temp starts to raise disturbingly high. To combat this you want to find a low temp fan switch. This will turn the radiator fan on sooner, and not really mess with your gas mileage. On the highway the air moving through the front already cools the engine just as much as a low temp fan switch.
