My car “Ling”
1984 SE 4speed 350

Odometer doesn’t work.
Speedometer works correctly.
Trip meter works correctly.
Odometer has only raised about 15 miles in the last 500.

I have replaced the odometer’s electric motor from a donor speedo head.

Looking for thoughts and opinions before I can work on it next week.

Copied to this thread:

Well, other then someone breaking the forum...
The trip and ODO motors are wired in parallel, if one works, the other has to. Maybe the gears are messed up somehow and freewheeling??? A loose solder joint sounds most probable. Try swapping the plugs, that would tell you if its the board or the motor.

Honestly, I'ts got to be extreemly rare that the trip works but the ODO doesn't.

it wasn't me, i swear...

ya, i thought they are in paralle, thats why i was sure swapping the electric motor would solve my problem.

And i "think" i was paying attention but, didn't notice anything wrong with the gears on the numbers when i changed it.

They get a common signal from the speedo circuit card, but mechanically they are seperate units. They each have their own plug in on the speedo circuit card. The drive gear for the odometer may be slipping on the shaft or the stepper motor could be getting an intermittent signal. Maybe a loose plug on the circuit card?

Another common problem is that the trip odometer reset plunger binds due to old dirty grease on it's slider. This prevents the button from returning completely to the rest position - and also causes the trip odometer to stop working - you may also hear a faint click coming from the dash occasionally.

The cure is to remove the speedometer, clean out the crud from the trip odometer reset mechanism and relube it with a small (tiny) amount of silicone lube.

I had that problem with my 88, the trip meter wouldn't work, or it would stop when it would get to 99.9 It was the reset mechanism. But he is complaining that the trip odo is working, and the mileage one isn't, thats pretty uncommon.
