Just had new engine put in 86 gt 2.8.It starts up ok and seems to run good on cold start. After running for a while, and up to normal temp I can stop turn off the engine, but then if I restart it will start ok but when I go from park to drive it will die almost every time.I have no clue.

I would have to say it is your TCC. Do a search for it and you will find repair procedure and symptom. Someone else may have another thought.

As a temporary "fix" and at least to confirm it - reach over the top and pull the green plug off the front side of the tranny. Let it cool off for a while, and you should be good to go.

If it never happens again (it probably wont!), now you know what the problem is anyhow....

I had a similar problem after my engine was replaced- turned out to be bad grounds- $Rich$ has an old thread which showed him adding a ground wire from the battery to the engine block.
