check all the ends where the shift cables mount to the trans. also, check under the center console and make sure none of the clips that hold the cable in havent popped out
didn't check the trans ends yet . but under the shifter is about 20.00 in change do you think that could mess with it . the change is under the flat base of the shifter the cables are all hooked up at the shifter end
and i can get the 1-4 with out a problum

I agree with $Rich$. that happened to my 4 speed before, where the cable connects to the tranny, there is a little clip that holds it there, i was driving and it popped off. All i could get it into was 2nd gear. I was far from anything, but luckily i had a piece of wire in the car, so i rigged it up good enough to get home.

If I remember correctly, the select cable pulls as it goes into the 3-4 slot, is at rest in the 1-2 slot and has to push into the Reverse slot. Have somebody pull the shifter all the way over to the Reverse side while you watch the linkages. Your cable might be buckling between the mounting point and the linkage on the transmission. There is a guide on the end of the cable that keeps it straight... until it breaks. Then you're basically trying to push a length of rope into a hole. The pulling action works fine but the push is a bit tricky. I had this happen with my "shift" cable on my 85 4 spd. Since it's only driven once a month at the autocross I chose not to buy a new cable and instead built an external guide out of mild steel, half a dozen washers and the steel sleeve from a brake pedal assembly's pivot bolt to keep the cable from flexing. $5-$10 and it works just fine.
