I am not sure how much 'whine' the fuel pump normally makes. Mine makes some when it first primes the system, then makes some noise while driving. Not real loud. You can hear it at idle, but once the car starts moving, the engine noise drowns it out. Also I've found I can only use about 8 gallons of gas before the pump will start to whine louder during trips (PA can be hilly , pump gets starved I think). If I replace the fuel pump (I read with only the ac-delco replacement), will the whine go away, and more importantly, will I be able to use more than 8 gallons of gas before filling up? The tank is small enough already Are there any good external fuel pumps, and would it make any difference in the amount of fuel I can use?

I dont think you will be able to pull more fuel out of the tank by changing the pump (just short of it being totally dead). I heard that if you run til your out of gas there will still be 2 gallon left in the tank. So in a sense you can never run a Fiero out of gas. grinn,. I never had to deal with an external pump on a fuel injected engine. sorry...

I had the fuel pump replaced in my 2M4 and I noticed a whine that came with the new pump. I asked the mechanic about it and he said that some of the aftermarket pumps may do that. I just dealt with it since I was just glad to get it on the road again. If I were to do it all over....AC Delco only!!!!
my friends 96 Olds had a very noticable whine that came from the fuel pump. everyone commented on it who rode in the car. sounded like a high performance electric fuel pump- it was so loud. her dad said it made that noise ever since he bought the car 6 years ago. the car had 190,000 miles when the pump died. new pump- no more whine. i have read that a pump can whine for a long time before it goes...but it is a sign that the pump is working too hard. might be good insurance to change it. theyre not like a mechanical pump where u can change one in a few minutes and be on your merry way.

p.s. car is currently at 210,000 miles and running very smooth! 3800 series II non sc. my fiero wants one very bad.

If a pump was recently changed you can bet that it was installed wrong and is touching the bottom of the tank. this is common and will make a ton of noise. also sometimes they replace the pulse hose connecting the pump to the pickup tube with hard fuel line will increase noise transmission as well. If you haven't had the pump out recently then yes I'd say the pump is on it's way out.
My pump was whining but that seems normal for Fieros. Finally it died and I replaced it with an A/C Delco pump, it whines slightly less but still does it when it's low on fuel and I hit the brakes or turn sharply. I like it actually, lets me know when I'm about to run out of gas.

I have a brand new AC delco, and I can barely hear it at idle or outside the car.
Ditto.
My new ACDelco pump replaced an aftermarket one that lasted only a few months but whined like mad! Actually the delco isn't new anymore; its 3 years old. No problems with it.
i have a walbro 255 lph fuel pump and it whines loud, kinda nice i think. but when i hit the brakes or use turn signals it dies down a lil, could be alternator? idk , but maybe you have an aftermarket?

You just get what you get, some are just louder than others. As long as it works, just ignore it. Mine was loud in one car for 100K miles.....but it was a lot louder when fuel got below 1/4 tank....so I liked having a free 'low fuel' warning buzzer.
I went through 2 aftermarket pumps, they where very loud compared to the ac/delco ones, I went with a Delphi one--(makes parts for GM) the 1st one did this noise business all over again,, they talked me in to another Delphi---This time I made sure the little rubber groment at the bottom was placed in there correctly--then did away with the pulsator and used the little gas line they provide----can`t hardly hear it now.. Changing out pumps are easy (no worries) God knows I`ve done my share, the first tank drop is always the hard one--after that you`ll wonder why you waited so long--vasoline really helps out when re-installing. Good idea to replace new hoses while your down there--and if your pump is still running , now is a good time to pump out the gas --most go out right after you fill up.....

I had a noisy pump a while back. Once when I ran out of gas, I begged a gallon of 2 stroke fuel from a tree surgeon to get me to the next gas station. The pump was quiet for a year before it failed.

As far as I know, my pump is original. The car has 69k miles on it, and sat for a while (~10 years I think). It has whined since the day I got it, but hasn't increased in loudness yet. Maybe gunk in the tank is contributing to the problem? For those that have had them die, was there any warning? Whine getting louder, or making other noises?
