My cars running wierd. its like... skipping, or... like it'll be running smooth and then get that little dum......and it'll skip or something. its so hard to explain, its just not running smooth, and the RPM gauge is being very funny, not being smooth at all in saying what RPM's I'm at, its all jumpy and skippy and twitching alot

Anyone? This has something to do with this stupid exuahst leak I think I have..

also, yeah... when i first start my car, it'll squeel for like a full minute before it stops and after it stops the rpm's go up a hundred or so. ?

Sounds like it could be the ignition module. That would explain the jumpy tach.

Had this happen to me on 1st 85 GT - replacing the plug wires (they were the original wires) cured the problem

Is your car a stick or an auto, and what year, motor, ect.
this info should help in curing your problem.

If it is a stick though, change your tach filter. It is located just behind your tachometer. You can pick one up from RodneyDickman his site should be under the "vendor" link.

hope this helps,

-Phil

if it's the tach filter you can just unplug it.
your tach wont work, but you can listen for it to sputter.

if it still sputters then it's the module (very common)
i bet there are 100 PFFs that keep a spare module in their car, and the tools to change it.

I just replaced them less than 500 miles ago. I didnt, however, change the plugs or the dist. cap and rotor. maybe that?

I personally keep two ignition modules, that way if mine and a buddies goes out we can repair both. I also keep a spare coil.

Don't know if this will help or not, but there is also a tach filter under the heat-shield where the coil mounts in my '87 GT

mine did that before and it turned out to be the coil. might not be your solution but its worth a look

Ever get this figured out? I'm having the exact same issue. I've already replaced the tach filter, module, coil, and ecm. Next stop I guess is the plug wires. I find it a bit weird that plug wires can cause the tach to get jumpy but this thing is pissing me off so I'll give it a shot, they are getting a bit old.

Cheap and even moderately priced aftermarket plug wires have been a thorn in my behind more times than I care to admit. Usually after it's fixed, I regret that I even bothered to change out the original wires. As old as they were, the originals still worked. Replacement wires tend to get crappy after 15,000-20,000 miles and then you tend to rule them out as "they are practically brand new"-----------wrong!!! The last time I had an issue, I misted the engine compartment on a dark night and they put on quite a light show!

That sounds exactly the same thing I had. Wire between ignition module and coil was broaken next to connector. It seems Fierostore does not sell them for no reason. It may be hard to find exact place for damage but try pulling wires from connectors while engine is idling. When you find the right place engine stumbles. I fixed my and it seems to work. Tach meter is stable and engine stumbles no more.

I wonder why people always blaim ignition module. They fail mostly because external damage, broken coil or bad heat connection. It is always good idea to reduce temperature under hood. I have measured temperatures between 60-70 degrees C, that is a lot for any semiconductor.
