I've got a 84 2m4. The blue dingy thingy is missing. The po must have removed it. Where can I get one? I mainly want to see if the indicators work at all.

its blue, it dings, and its a thingy. its under the pass side dash, it dings if doors are open, lights on, ect ect. it can get annoying i suppose, prolly why its missing. find a parts car in a j-yard, or post in the mall for one.

Go to a salvage yard. I'm sure there will be a Fiero that has one. I dont think they changed them at all over the years the car was made.

The blue dingy thingy is the chime box. It's located under the dash on the right hand side by the heater box. It's what dings when yuo leave your lights on, e-brake on and your keys in the ignition.

Missed it by a minute! LOL!

There's two revisions of blue dingy thing. They're both fully compatible with each other, so any you find will work.
The reason it was removed was probably because of Randon Blue Dingyness. It's a syndrome that effects many Fieros, and is caused by bad solder joints inside.
Which ever revision you get, I suggest you take it apart and resolder the components. Especially the thermal "disc" where it intersects the board. Should make it better than new.

The ones from the 3rd gen Camaro (82 to 88 - not sure of the later 3rd gen years) will also partially work. They are missing the input for the e-brake, so if you never use the e-brake, this is an alternate solution

It is located drivers side just above where your right knee would be when seated. These are also blue in color, but is missing the one pin (ie: the e-brake input). This has been tried and verified.

NOTE: the Firebird/TransAm ones are different for some reason.

Tim

BTW if you get really pissed at blue dingie, it is possible to rip it out from the drivers seat. I've done it before.

Wow you must have really long arms

Anyone know where the chime unit is on a 3rd gen F-body? I looked in one at the junkyard and couldn't find it.

All the 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird "dingy thingies" aren't the same.. The one in my 1990 Trans Am is under the dash on the driver's side, above the left hand kick panel.. The unit is black and it's shaped differently. (smaller/thinner) It makes different sounds too... (for example, headlights on + no key = continuous steady tone) I haven't looked at the connector, but I'm pretty sure it's different..... If there are matching units, then they will most likely be in the early 80's models.. (perhaps 82-88 ??)

There are other versions of the chime box used in other GM cars. The problem is that some are missing functions or have functions moved to different terminals. I don't know if any of the later ones can be plugged in directly. I would guess not.

The newest GM cars have all this built into the BCM. The chime functions play thru the radio.

A couple of years ago, I pulled one from either a Grand Am or a Pontiac 6000. I really think it was a 6000. It was on the passenger side, also. Its functions matched with the Fiero. Did find one in a Fiero that had a pin bent over. It was for the E=brake.

So what does it mean when the BDT (I'm in the aircraft business, so use a lot of acronyms) just dings once, while driving, say every 3rd day?

I've been dreaming of ways to convert the BlueDingyThingie into a TalkingThingy, with either a nice sexy female voice or some crazy voice, like Adam Sandler maybe. Heard of anyone doing this?

The Blue Dingy Thingy in my 86 made very sad noises so I pulled it long ago ( but still have it). I have an Olds Cutlass whose dingy thingy does this...
-If you leave the key in the ignition; Ding... Ding... Ding. Very polite; as if to say, " excuse me, sir , but you left the key in my ignition".
-If you leave the headlights on; ding!ding!ding!ding!. As if it's saying " OHMIGOSH TURN THEM OFF, TURN THEM OFF NOW PLEASE I CAN"T TAKE THIS ABUSE..... Whew, thanks."

It means the circuit board is probably warped. One of my old Fiero's did that. When I replaced it with a different/newer BDT it quit.

As I said, this is usually from bad solder joints inside. The box is easy to take apart and resolder if you're handy with a soldering iron.
Fixed mine up nicely. Before every now and then it would make the most pitaful little screech you have ever heard.

Regardless of the car... The construction of the chime units is generally the same. The main diference being first or second generation. (This is covered in my cave....)

Different chimes from other cars sometimes have functions moved or missing vs teh blue box used in Fiero. (The Red unit for example is short one function and has one moved to a diferent pin as I remember.)

Far as I know, the chime boxes are all made by a subcontractor for GM. It's not even a Delco part... The Patents and manufacturing are/were held by Lectron in Rochester Michigan. (Or whomever Lectron might have been sold/merged with if anyone in the last 20 years.) The patents are online at uspto.gov if anyone wants to see them. Semi interesting read.

The silver one is the 4-way flasher. And if memory serves, the white one is the horn relay.

Actualy wouldnt be that hard.... You can get chips that will record like 10 seconds of audio, then play it back when triggered. Might be a little bulky that way though, cause you'd have to have a seprate chip for each one. but im sure you could find better options or just smaller chips. The chip Ive used is like 3/4 wide and 2.5" long
