I have been discovering quite a few things on my recent purchase (87 GT 2.8 V6), but has anyone out there seen white fluffy (looks like cotton, but can't be) stuff that is in and around the engine comparment? I have seen this material around the coil and the other side of the engine, and it looks like it is coming out of the cooling tubes just due to the locations. Could the blower in the rear be picking up stuff from the trunk and blowing it around? Any opinions on how to eliminate it? It's annoying, but hasn't caused any issues.

Did this car sit for awhile? Around here we call stuff like that "mouse stuffing". I find the plastic molding sound deadener and paper towels shredded up for mouse nests occasionally in some of my stored parts cars.

I was working on my 85 Gt yesterday and found numerous white shreds around the blower outlets in the engine compartment. Taking a few things apart I found a mouse nest in the trunk blower area with maybe 15 paper towels shredded up and lots of mouse droppings. And this car was only covered for a week while I waited for parts!

Just a thought....

Well,

I looked in the blower area in the trunk - no mouse droppings, no nest. The white stuff seems almost like asbestos, since I found some sitting on the exhaust plumbing and it wasn't even scorched. Some of the areas in the engine were packed with this stuff, but I didn't find any mouse poo in those locations either. If they are mice, they are the cleanest mice I've ever seen. Does anyone know what is behind the blower tubes? Is that area accessible?

I will continue to investigate and let you guys know what I find.

I agree it is a mouse, or a white moose. Did you pull the carpet in the right rear trunk area to look at the blower? Need to start there.

I finally go pictures of the white material that appears to be coming from the blower in the engine compartment. I found some in the area of the coil and some blown onto the altenator. Below is the picture I took...You can see the white material sitting on top of the manifolds, behind the coil and to the right of the EGR valve. As I indicated before, the material does not seem to be cotton, but it looks like it, but it will not burn. The next task is opening up the blower vents and checking them out. So far, no mouse poo, no chewed cables or plastic parts.

I removed my tail lights for restoration and found a nest that I'm pretty sure is where all mice in the would come from!!! Just check all over the car for a nest. Usually removing the stuffing and driving the car a good bit will scare the mice off. Then they'll most likely return to their home in my car.

Behind the blower tubes is a black, blowmolded plastic air duct that leads to the fan in the right hand side of the trunk. There is no insulation mat under the trunk carpeting in this area.

What you have is a good old fashoned mouse nest. It looks like chewed rope shreds or fiberglass insulation from some place else in your garage. As far as the lack of droppings, mice won't poop in their nests, just everywhere else going back & forth. Vacuum it out & set a bunch of traps. They love peanut butter!

From the picture and from my car's history , it looks like the filler from the EGR tube cover. I also found that the cover on the cables near the firewall leaked something close to looking like this.

Arrows are the spots I would look at.

Your right about "Starting There". I was in the bone yard the other day and pulled the carpet in that same corner of a 86 GT and there was a mouse nest there. Must be the designated spot.
