Today while idling in a parking lot my '87 GT 5-speed made a strange whining sound that seemed to be coming from the shifter area. I pressed down on the clutch and shifted into first and the whining changed pitches and continued until I started moving, and then the noise stopped. When I stopped before exiting the parking lot, I put in neutral and the noise came back, the engine dropped below 1K rpm and then died. The engine would not immediately start up, but eventually did after 3-4 minutes.
The car took off fine after that, but at the next light, it made the noise again. I kept my foot on the gas to keep it from dying again. For the rest of the trip home, it didn't happen.
Any ideas? I'm clueless on what this could be.
Thanks

That whine is probably your fuel pump, it is right under your arm rest. Have you checked your fuel level latley? When the fuel gets low, the pump gets louder because it isn't submerged in gas.

The only thing in that area that could whine, I would think, would be the fuel pump. The console is the gas tank if you didn't know and the fuel pump is in it.

Thanks for trying to help me clear up this issue, guys. The fuel is near 1/4 tank, and has been before obviously, and not made this sound. I trust your responses and agree that it may be the fuel pump then. I'll top it off in the morning and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks again.
