what kind of foam is used when doing fiberglass work and where can I get it? Auto parts store maybe? Or online? I know it is two parts that I mix together. Also to the people that are familiar with fiberglassing what is a good release agent. I have some papers here somewhere that I believe said to use paint I think? I think it said when using foam the bondo or resin, one of the two, will eat away the foam which I don't want since it will be what I use to make my shapes. Maybe duct tape, or I think I also read once somewhere about a wax?

I figure there is more than one thing that people on here have tried to varying degrees of success. Unfortunately all the stores around here don't carry books in stock on fiberglassing so I have to wait and order a book. Anyone have any recommendations? Also on videos?

I have read a lot online and on here so it doesn't seem too hard to do, cept for all the sanding and time it takes.

I saw the site where the guy makes some alterations to his gt nose and uses polyurathane epoxy instead of resin with the fiberglass matt so that it has the ability to bend like the stock nose. Is this a good thing to try if making alterations to a front nose?

When people talk about fiberglass and cars, they are usually referring to polyester resin + mekp. It can be used with either fiberglass mat or cloth. Poly resin will melt certian types of foam....so yes, get the 2 part urethane type. Go to www.uscomposites.com they have the best prices on the east coast, and they have a nice little FAQ about the foam.

As for flexability, it really doesn't matter if you are using polyester resin or a 2 part epoxy system. Both systems can be laid up for flexability, strength, stiffness, light-weightness (?), or any number of properties. These properties are all fairly relative and very much inter-related. What do you mean by a flexable part?

Release can be as simple as a layer of plastic wrap or tin foil, plastic tape, metal furnace tape, whatever. The fiberglass surface is going to be rough with these. If you have a glossy surface, you might be using typical automotive primer or paint, wet sanded and /or polished to somewhere between 600 and 2000 grit. This glossy surface will produce a smoother part. Apply 3 to 5 seperate coats of almost any type paste wax, and then brush or spray on 2 coats of PVA.

It's really easy. But if you practice on a few trial parts first, you will get much better results.

Have fun

If you want to use cheap materials just to practice fiberglassing. You can use the blue foam that they sell at hardware stores. It wont melt with fiberglass resin on it. I've tried it already. John

open cell foam mostly will not melt with polyester resin
open cell looks like a sponge
styrofoam will melt in to a sticky mess unless you use epoxy
it is [closed cell] looks like beads
open cell shapes better anyway
if you want strong foam get airex to leave in the work

Question wonder and be wierd
are you kind?
