Having just noticed how bad the tires on my formula were i went and swapped them for a set on my 84 junker...the threads looked good, the tires basically looked good no dry cracking or anything...didnt notice any brake clearance probs, but when i drive down the road for some reason the car feels squirrly...came home checked tire pressures, none were too far off..retorqued the lugnuts which were tight already...
Is there some reason for this other then my something wrong with a rim/tire? Are 84 rims not compatable with 88s?

The 14" aluminum rims are the same for all years. Steel rims were not available at all in 88, though.
The 13" 84 rims won't even fit on an 88 due to caliper clearance issues, IIRC.

Don't know what to say about the "squirrely" feel. Think you might have belts that have shifted?

by squirly I mean a slight movement of the wheel makes car jerk to that side...I do have some alignment issues in front as i noticed one of the worn fronts i took off was worn to the cords on the inside...as long as they fit im going to use them for next couple days while i order new tires...

If im not mistaken, all 88's have rims with an offset. The rims on 88's are set up as RWD rims and all the other years are FWD rims. So a set of '87 and earlier rims wouldn't stick out as far from the hub as 88's would. I dont know if this would have an effect on the alignment of the car.... but that would be my guess as to why its acting squirrly.

Probably the front end is toed out (pigeon toed). That will make the car want to change direction more quickly. If it's really bad, it will also chew up the inside edges of the tires. If just one side is worn, there may be other issues, but that would still explain the "funny" handling.

Sorry. No. All of the 14" aluminum rims are the same. 84-88. Period.
The 88 front (only) hubs stick out ~1/2" further than the 84-87 front hubs. The 15" "lace" front wheels have accommodations made to the offset so that they don't stick out as far as the "normal" wheels would.
Other than those 88 specific 15x6" lace front wheels, all of the other 14" and 15" aluminum wheels are the same castings. All years.

Could be the tires themselves. Budget tires with weak sidewalls will really make the car feel squirrely
