Overheating can have many causes. First, do a visual inspection of the cooling system, especially the metal tubes under the rockers, look for dents or crushed parts. Check the waterpump belt for proper tightness. Burp air out of the system by filling the radiatior to the top at front, put the front cap back on, fill the rear the rest of the way, put the rear cap back on with the thermostat removed, start and run the engine for a minute, turn off, add in the rear until full, then install the cap and thermostat. Up front again, add to the overflow reservoir to about half full, watch the level over the next few days and add as needed.
A bad thermostat can cause overheating, if removing it causes the engine to cool off then install a new one. They're cheap compared to a new motor.
Are there any leaks anywhere?
