I'm interested in doing DIS (distributorless) ignition in my v8 swap, anybody have experience with this ? Any reason I can't just grab something stock out of the junkyard ?

Do the stock DIS systems run independantly of the computer ?

Thanks for any info !

The only V8's that GM built with DIS are the LT5 and Northstar.
There is some talk on MSEFI about adapting Northstar DIS to a Chevy: http://www.msefi.com/viewtopic.php?t=4559

You may have to go to some sort of aftermarket system... there are also coil-per-cylinder ignitions available aftermarket.

Either way, you can use a factory crank sensor. The OBD-II LT1/4's and Vortec 350's use a crank sensor behind the timing cover. It should be bolt-on for every conventional small block.

The Ford EDIS system is an enhanced version of the DIS ignition system. The major difference is that the DIS system requires a CID (Cylinder IDentification; cam phase) sensor in addition to the crank driven toothed wheel. The EDIS system only requires a 36-1 toothed wheel and VRS (Variable Reluctance Sensor) crank sensor.

The EDIS system is comprised of an EDIS module, crank wheel, crank sensor, and coilpack(s). This system is completely standalone and will properly ignite 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines using the wasted spark method.

Wonder if this would work.

I'm going to try to do it with my small block. I'll use LS1 coils with FAST's Edist module. I need to add a cam sensor. I haven't done it yet. I'm working on other things before I try to tackle that one. I know of one person for sure running an EDist with a factory ECM. But his isn't a small block, its a grand national if IIRC. So it cam with both a cam and crank signal.

Not sure, but the OBDII LT1/4's may have had a cam sensor as well...
