Hi All, I'm about to become the proud owner of an 87 Fiero GT 2.8, heavily modified and stretched and now bodily looking exactly like a Lamborghini Murcielago!!

My question is... I know the power of the stock engine is 140hp or so, but as I have acess to high octane fuel here in England, (98 ron), will the cars engine management compensate for the higher octane fuel and give more power output? or do I need to manually advance the ignition timing a bit to take advantage of this? Alternatively, will this not be possible due to the low compression engine, and would I be better using regular grade (although the lowest octane here is 95!)

Also, The car will be running without a cat and free flowing exhaust, will this have any noticeable effect on performance?

I suppose to do the car justice, I'll need to consider an engine swap at some stage, but don't fancy all the work involved just yet! I'll not ask your opinions on which engine yet, as I've already gathered this is a bit debatable !! lol!!

Thanks in advance to you all.

Paul N

Welcome New Member!

Im not too familiar with using the higher octane fuels, but the 95 octane should work just fine if your using a stock engine.

well I see that you are talking in fuel rated by RON. Your fuel may not be necessarily the same as ours which is rated by:
ocatane number = (RON + MON) / 2. In any event, you are probably fine as is.

like he said
ocatane number = (RON + MON) / 2
RON is higher and MON is lower
You have basicly the same gas or at least very close, just rated differently.
for more info on octane look up octane ratings in google.
so you will be fine

It sounds like you have a nice car: pictures are required. If you have a digital camera make a .jpg phot and go to the PIP box at the bottom of the page to load up Pennock's Image Poster.

The engine was designed for regular gas. Any added power from changing timing and higher octane fuel will be barely noticable if not non existant. Save the money and just run regular until your ready to go for a swap. Just have fun driving it as is for now.
