I am installing a catalytic converter on a car that it did not have one. Does the heat shield to the Cat go down towards the ground or up?

Thanks
Frank

It goes down towards the ground, to prevent tall grass or other debris from directly touching the surface of the cat when it's hot.

That makes sense. I had a new catalytic converter put in both of my Fieros and they were both installed with the shield facing up. Hmmmm, am I going to need to change them around? Did they install them wrong? This was an actual muffler shop that did the job.

I have heard it can go up or down. I prefere it up it keep the temp down around the wiring harness. I recommend putting it up but its up to you.

I would personally not feel comfortable having my cat shield facing any other direction besides towards the ground. There have been a number of cars mentioned here on the Forum that have caught on fire from being parked in tall grass (sometimes a mechanical breakdown on the side of the road, etc.) or from having other debris come in direct contact with the cat surface. The shield is designed to go towards the ground.

The choice is up to you.
